After my short stay in NkhataBay, I hit the road in the direction of Mzuzu. This city is known for its honey, I regularly buy honey since my arrival in Malawi, but also for the tea and coffee that is grown.

I will take advantage when seeing a pharmacy to buy a treatment against schistosomiasis. Lake Malawi is deemed to contain the parasite, everyone advises to treat contamination when one is immersed. Simple: the number of pills that must be swallowed engages between the fourth and sixth week after the last swim and is determined by weight.

Here in Malawi, this treatment is reallycheap: I’ll have only two treatments snuffed USD and all other parasites that cannot be nabbed. Knowing that the same treatment can reach 50 USD in other countries!

A good local pub, full of honey and I am on the road to Livingstone a beautiful gravel track along the mountain.

In each village, children flock to share a few laughs and grimaces in the banana fields, or to proudly display their toys « Homemade » full of ingenuity.

« What ? Where lived Stone ??? »

Khondowe is the name of a small village perched in the mountains.

After dropping several other sites in Malawi because of the strong presence of mosquitoes, this is the place that was chosen in 1894 Dr Robert Laws, Scottish Catholic missionary came to evangelize the people and assist them in eradicating the slavery.

He will baptize this Livingstone Mission in honour of Dr Livingstone will build schools, hospital and a church.

Currently you can visit a small museum in the former home of Dr Laws: « The Stone House ».

By cons, do not listen to the one guide that has not all inclusive!

Stone house is not the house whereLivingstone lived

« What? Where lived Livingstone?? »

It is just a stone house!

The missionary Robert Laws having arrived here in 1894 and Livingstone had died in 1873 , now how the hell is that possible?

« Yes yes! Livingstone house! «

Grrrrr!

I will stay five days in a small campsite, the tent pitched to 3 metres from a mountain slope with a beautiful view of Lake Malawi.

Livingtone is perched at an altitude of 1300 m, while the Lake itself is 500 m, the walks in the area offer breath-taking panoramic views.

The bike away at the campsite, I searched for my sneakers and walk every day here is a paradise for hikers.

A walk to the falls, visiting the mission and its beautiful buildings and meeting with a local beekeeper happy to show me « The local process » Guaranteed 100% Organic!

It’s not all that, my visa ends for Malawi: so now towards Tanzania!

If the site Livingstone was chosen for the absence of mosquitoes, scorpions they are there. So I moved my tent, I will be able to find one that had housed below: and the bastard who I thought was dead was alive and well!

The descent north side of Livingstone is reputed to be one of the most rugged and spectacular in Africa. I’d say it’s still not as bad as the Sani Pass in Lesotho! Pfff!

Border crossing Tanzania: Relatively fast.

Where it goes bad, it’s happened once in Tanzania and on my motorcycle insurance.

Guys are warning me about the front controls and advise me to get one after the barrier. Until then it is as usual.

In a small office two sinister guys want to sell me a Tanzanian insurance for 3 months (minimum possible) for a total of
90,000 Tsh (Tanzanian Shilling) about 50 €.

Having understood from the time that everything is negotiable in Africa, I began the palaver to try to lower theprice. So one of the guys out an insurance to meet specifications anothercertificate. Another sign covering the entire East Africa to Egypt.

I go into the game to my surprise the pricedrops considerably and after completing the certificate, the guy says that for this brand however no invoice will be given to me. I realize that this paper, although it is true and stamped as banknotes in silver ink has certainly »fallen off the truck » and having no possibility to register at thecompany level, the proof of Insurance is certainly less expensive and morepractical about my recovery … but I will not be sure…

So I go back on my decision and opted forthe first contract, but not necessarily that the arrangements: the form is nowfilled pen. The price goes down by magic with nothing to ask.

Unmasked, a type made me downright understand that while I will not be sure but on Police checks: it will be « no problem Boss! ».

I decided to take the risk of going to Dar Es Salaam without insurance, to seek a « real » office. The type very quietly showed me a poster that I had not noticed on the wall behind me, and let me take a picture quietly insinuating that they do not like the French.

I manage the case by releasing 5000 Tch or € 2.5 to snatch me from this lookout ambush without losing face in front of friends suddenly arrived in the office…

Outside the border area in Dar Es Salaam, the locals do not speak English, but fortunately, the reception has left a bitter taste will soon be forgotten with « Karibu » (welcome in Swahili) launched by the smiling Tanzanian that I encounter since.

So I take my time to reach the capital alternating: a local guest house where I spend a good time with the road that does not include a tourist is in there, great camping on the river to output Iringa where I meet two South Africans well nice and Bb, a grandpa who camedown all East Africa in 2008 on a Vespa!, and finally a camp in the bush just before crossing the Mikumi Park.

To park, the days are warm but it is really cold during the night (sometimes less than 6 degrees)

Le YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association).

Road: a beautiful tar but as usual. Still on it must be extra careful! Trucks, small buses and other vehicles have passed the word to roll at breakneck speed and uncouple without warning!

The arrival in Dar Es Salaam, which means « Haven of Peace » in Arabic, as happens in most capitals in Africa: a rather quiet in that infernal racket and terrifying dust cap.

A Vanderbijlpark, Jerome, a friend of Isa Oliv, gave me details of Benoit, a biker living here. I called from Malawi to anticipate a new tyre change and he gave me the contact Denis, a Belgian born in Kenya, chief mechanic for two years in the new garage KTM and offering good tyre dimensions.

But arriving on a Friday night, I need to find a place to spend the weekend before I get there.

The owner of the campsite Livingstone had told me the cheapest place to stay in Dar. The YMCA (Young Men’s Christian
Association). I’m sure everyone is singing a hit Village People! But hotel brand full and frankly, the nonchalance and poor service at reception did not really make me want to stay there.

A call to Benoit for advice, and I was offon the other side of the bay through a crowded barge: a good laugh with passengers. I will stay three nights at a campsite. And here the nights are hot!

The following Monday morning, I’ll see Denis KTM in the garage.

Apart from changing my tyres, Denis lets me do an oil change and adjustment of valve clearance.

Allez : bon vent !

In recent months, I think a little to my return route. To help me develop a plan, I am thoughtful of the rainy season coming to East Africa. If I do not want to pay in Ethiopia where the roads are notoriously difficult, and enjoy a bit of summer for my northern European recovery, the ideal would be to wait two or three months before taking the road to the North .

Two or three months? And what if I were to take a trip to the islands? Comores, Mayotte, Madagascar? In addition it is the best season there in the coming months: not too hot and dry!

So I have to organize boat trips and try to establish a budget.

All it will take me some time and Denis offers to host me the time researching! He’s not life grand?

Therefore very welcomed at Denis, his wife Susie and little Maya.

In the port of Dar Es Salaam there are a lot of small agencies that sell ferry trips up Zanzibar and the Comores, but very expensive with the bike and nothing to Mada. I will take one day tour the cargo companies but they do not want to take passengers to and ask for the bike box: very expensive too.

Between the Comores and Madagascar, David, a friend of Comorian origin settled in Lille gives me information: no problem,
three ferries a week.

I do my calculations, looking everywhere, but the results are not encouraging. This is really not a reasonable budget.

The day I parked the bike in front of a grand hotel casino: giving a ticket to the guards, they watch for it and I’m going to walk into town and the harbour. I met an Italian settled here for 5 years and he tells me the French transport company ‘Bolloré’ which is out of the city. There, I meet a French Jean-Marie. He has good contacts at the port who advise to go to Zanzibar to take a boat to the Comores. But ultimately nothing concrete. I began to give up when I meet a client of the garage where Denis works.

Jean-François also has contacts in port and offers to take me to meet directly with the Captain of a ship sailing on the following
Tuesday for the Comores. After some talking and negotiations at the gate, we come closer to the boat and talk to the right arm of the captain.

After 10 minutes, I get permission to travel with them Tuesday. Return fare with the bike and grub during the three days of sea to the Comores, two times cheaper than one way with the agencies that did not provide the food! It said the vessel in question looks like a mini cargo which all seem to have 500 years. A handshake and appointment Monday afternoon to see the dockworkers charge the bike on the boat.

I have the opportunity to go for a ride on my return to Zanzibar leaving the bike at Denis

So the program starting Tuesday for the Comores, where I will stay a few days, until Mada ferry which I intend to turn about two months back Comoros me to wander a few days and back to Dar Es Salaam.

Go to: good luck!

If I asked the riddle: what is this body of water right out of my way?

Stating that I am in Africa and going north, traveling the winding roads of the bay with beautiful beaches and through a series of fishing villages.

Everywhere comes to: the Indian Ocean …

Yet this huge populous greater variety in the world of exotic fish is calledLake Malawi.

Sometimes reaching a width of over 150 km, this incredible reserve of fresh water (source of precious life in Africa, searched for hours by women in arid areas), is the fifth largest lake in the world.

So I left Mozambiqueafter just thirty days criss-crossing the country.

Border crossing: smooth

Malawi, and especially the area around the lake to the sea looks like a magnet for tourists. Lodges and cottages backpackers flock everywhere.

After crossing the border, I will directly to Monkey Bay to find a small camp run by a South African.

When I arrived after a day just eating bananas, I was starving. Went to the bar 4 metres away from the beach and had a bite to eat! I left my jacket with the boss of the place.

An hour later, a full stomach, I will find my jacket, it was robbed! Wallet, credit card, cash, missing!

Definitely, having gone through the West Africawithout a hitch, I accumulate concerns in tourist areas that attract the same time some thugs.

So here I am stuck here a few days, until the very effective insurance Master card via UPS sends me a new card.

I leave Monkey Bay to go to Cape Mc Lear, a small fishing village, also very touristy.

Even if they cannot move for two weeks, it gets worse for the bubble trap.

Fastoche…

A white sand beach, friendly villagers, although initially a bit annoying for some people to sell at any price handcrafted souvenirs of all kinds. After a few days, I was part of the furniture and could walk the streets at any time by sharing with children big smiles and hellos in the local language.

In Malawi, there are 27 different dialects and is the dominant Chichewa. But English is the official language, hello simply says: Hello!

Drinking tea and eating in local restaurants and tea room, do my shopping at the market (tomatoes, fish, eggs and especially homemade peanut butter) for the mess meals at the campsite. Long hours studying the swing of the hammock, swimming and breakfast on the beach with « PanCakeMan. »

The UPS tracking number allowed me to keep an eye on the progress of the journey of my new card.

Northern France in Paris and Lyon, then to Germany and finally arrive at Johannesburg Lilongwe, Malawi’s capital, transportation
lasted only three days. After more than 12 days!

And then a phone call from a guy at UPS in Lilongweasking me if I received my mail.

« My mail? You must know that at UPS it’s very serious: a password was given to me by phone after several questions to ensure my identity. And I can only receive my envelope! «

« Yes, yes, but your mail was deposited somewhere in Monkey Bay: Can you remind me in 30 minutes while I check on my computer because I have more phone package… »

The UPS guy Lilongwe has no plan?

Well I remember the type but do not understand much about the English, I have to go to Time’s Curia, a transportation agency, Monkey Bay the next day.

After three hours searching unsuccessfully for this famous agency, I remember the guy who still searched and said, « Oh no it is not in Monkey Bay, Mangochi it is » (70 km away).

He gives me the type number there and after another two hours to juggle different people, that’s for sure: they have my envelope.

At the office, small office of 3 square metersin the bus depot, nobody!

I remember the contact given by the second guy, who after calling the third had the coordinates of the other guy who knows the good guy, but he has no time to come then he asked me to spend my phone close to his closet. This is the manager of a bar 3m ² too. And, wonder, he has the keys to the closet of the transport agency!

So he opens the door, I was forbidden to enter and spring with an envelope to the attention of the hospital in Monkey Bay, closing with a key behind.

After another hour to explain that it is not for me, it ended up, exasperated, by re-opening the door, take a cardboard box containing the UPS mail and throw it on the dusty road in front of his bar. I searched, found my jacket and in laughter, leads me to the bike in the jostling crowd of onlookers caked around it. But the guy (the bistro) catches me, I think he wants me to sign a paper but no. In fact he asked me to take all the envelopes to Monkey Bay because the guy who does not have time to stay in his office is out of gas and must go there for a week to deliver urgent mail !

I refuse and break in sweat!

UPS in Africa, yet it is in…

In short, a day to run in all directions, and you do not know what? I’m left relaxed and in zen!

Despite this lack of seriousness,Africa is still damn funny. When you have time!

So I continue my road to the Noooorth!

I spend a lot of time talking with Phillimon who works here.

This young man aged twenty five years is truly amazing!

After being hired by the boss of the house for welcoming travellers, he quickly realized it was not going to occupy or be full-time, or to feed him: hardly anyone stops by true say and the pay is really miserable.

So he sought another income to support his family while staying there. Having some knowledge of agriculture and water at will, he sought what he could to push around.

Between the beach and the cottage, there is a strip of 150 meters of dune. But this is not really the best soil, although the closer the lodging more sand becomes slightly red laterite. However, a brilliant idea germinated!

Try to grow rice!

This implies to accomplish an incredible challenge: stripping the soil to a level slightly below the level of the lake (or a depth of 60 cm to 1 meter) so that the ground is continually flooded.

Phillimon initially negotiated with the village chief to buy a small plot of about 200 m long. Then he went to a seller of construction materials and negotiated the sale of sand. He still had to bring it to the paved road,600 meters away.

For this kind of exhausting work, it is the women inAfrica who are usually volunteers.

It is true that I regularly see men playing bao, traditional African game called mancala in West Africa, moving the ball in the box wood, drinking a soda or tea, while women are working…

A huge task! Such a small ant, fifteen women dig the sand and take it in large bins placed on the head! Each sandbox easily
reaches 25 lbs! , 7 days out of 7, 6 am to 18 hours. And while laughing and singing loudly! I tried to put a pot on my head! I can tell
you what they do is downright amazing!

Phillimon take no profit on the sale of sand:

« It is the case of women who do the hardest work. I take care of rice and a few other plants that I can grow closer to the house: a little corn, tomatoes and spinach need watering two times a day. «

By himself, he has managed to create a small local economy and everyone found there.

« It’s been almost three years since I started this project. First we did a test on a small area and the results were encouraging. Most boys in the village simply to catch a little and spend their meager recipe alcohol! I refuse to be poor! And I do not intend to wait for
someone to come out of my misery. «

The East Africa is very different from Western Africa. If the average wages are essentially identical (ie generally between 50 and 300 USD per month depending on qualifications), the influx of tourists who sometimes spend the same amount in one day creates a lot of frustration among the local young people.

Ultimately it is each time more in non-tourist areas as completely personal initiatives are observed such as Phillimon and that was more authentic interaction with people.

Weather-wise, it is still very hot during the day but the nights are becoming colder.

I also spent another fishing village, Nkhata Bay on the lake before heading back to Mzuzu and Livingstonia.

Allez : Zigomo ! (Merci en Chichewa)

zigomo! (Thanks in Chichewa)
