1st June, at police station Togo, a policeman, Alfred, is nice and clear that I am not in Olympic form.

He escorts me to the clinic 2 km away.

There are super effective!

A drop of blood taken from the fingertip and the test with in less than 5 minutes the verdict: I have malaria…

Temperature: 40.5 degrees.

I did not feel feverish yet, but I have been feeling the heat for the last 2 months…

Three doses of efferalgan in the ass (damn it hurts!) I fall asleep again in less than 2 seconds and woke up two hours later fresh as a roach!

The nurse gave me a treatment: Coarten (2 times a day for 4 days) and I’m telling myself that I may be in need of my malarone again (I have two cures on me but frankly I saw it coming: I was told that the symptoms were aches, vomiting and a feeling of lead in their eyes, but apart from fatigue and nausea this morning, I had none of any that…)

The problem is that I have just enough to pay the injections, plaster treatment and cold pasta they give me.

The nurse told me that the next day is Saturday and after spending the night here, I will go as far Badou 10 km away, to go to the bank and continue my journey…

Because they do not fly, I pitched my tent in the clinic and slept like a baby.

The next day, direction Badou on a single track that is the worst that I have taken since the beginning (one hour for 10 km) and fatigue returned as before.

After taking a big head to the bank to withdraw some money, I am once again on the knees. Lucky for me, there is also a dispensary in Badou: again more than 40 of fever.

They say that the treatment was not effective enough and put me on a drip of quinine.

I was off for three long days and nights in the fourth dimension!

Quinine is delirium: dizziness to know more get out of bed, nausea from morning to night to prevent me literally from swallowing anything. In these three days I ate two bananas a day…

The perf makes me pee every 5 minutes and not shit!

Between each bottle of quinine, a nurse comes with an empty air pipe near the drip, emptying a glass of the ground product.

Hens enter the room and start drinking the puddle on the floor. I’m delirious!

The head of the clinic, doctor who is not really a doctor (there is not enough Togo) I understand that not everyone has the chance to be able to afford an effective and solicits me to help the hospital.

In the second night, a couple from the bush, 25 km from here, will the road moped with their kid 3 years high fever, arrive too late: the boy died on the road.

That is also Africa. Malaria kills often children younger than 5 years and those who cannot afford to be treated.

Three days down to earth or rather three days in hell.

Tuesday the 5th, that afternoon, I can’t anymore. I can’t eat anything, I have nausea so bad, and if I stay here hungry I’ll succumb.

Test thick as they say, and they tell me that malaria is gone.

I’m still dizzy, but I think this time I suffer from hypoglycemia.

I’ll buy 2 bottles of water, sugar and limes, I prepared a vitamin energy mix, and decided from here: direction Atakpamé 85 km.

Three-hour drive with butterflies under the helmet. . .

There, I feel better.

I stop in a town, a guy on a Yamaha 125 XT asks me what I want. He is called Yovo Yovo and local language means « white »

A hotel!

Follow me, I’ll take you to the town hall.

Not the mayor I want is a place to sleep!

OK I am taking you to the town hall!

Damn it he’s pissing me off!

(But I do not know why, I follow him!)

In fact he was right: the municipal council has a hotel…

Off the bike I see next to it, a small hotel restaurant:

You have pizza here?

Yeah!

I finally eat something that makes me feel hungry!

I think I have never had so much fun eating.

I talk to Yovo and his friend Georges, the owner of the restaurant.

He is president of an association of waders Yovo is secretary.

If so, waders… On the wall I saw a poster of the waders Namur!

In fact they claim that the custom of Namur comes from here (I’ll let you do the research). In a village 35 km is an ancestral tradition.

Finally I chat friendly with Yovo and he took me home, telling me that there is a free room in the common courtyard.

The next day after a good night’s sleep and a good breakfast, (Omelettes and bread in a coffee shop), we start with the famous Yovo to see waders.

On the road he makes me visit his native village where people are sick because they drink green lake water (there are things to do here in terms of drilling and wells)

We are warmly welcomed in the village, and the kids are happy to walk on stilts to make a demo.

This is awesome!

A second night in Yovo, and he tells me that in fact this empty room where I sleep is the part of the chief of the canton that owns the property. Here is a canton of the city.

The leader who was his uncle died 4 days ago. Here, tradition dictates that the death of a chief is hidden for three months.

The body was buried incognito night following his death, and no one should mourn his departure, nor talk during these three months.

A grand ceremony will be celebrated and informed population

He told me that as I am abroad and I leave the next day I have the right to know, and it is a great honour to have stayed here!

I leave Yovo and George on Thursday, June 7th to reach the capital Lome.

On the road I bite into a delicious pineapple!

I found on the internet a contact for a KTM mechanic who is French, based in Lomé, and does good reviews on motorcycle.

But I’m overwhelmed because he offers to come to me emptying and changing pads. He also mounts my new tyres on rims. (They made the trip on the top box). I now have no spare tyres, they must take me to Namibia.

A good cleaning of the machine before you go on Friday.

Three days and three nights to recuperate and make a couple pizzas.

At the hotel, I meet the very friendly people Christine Pascal. The brother of the last works in Grande-Synthe! (Some appetizers and beer of course…)
