En face : l’Antarctique à un peu plus de 6000 kms (une paille), à droite l’océan Atlantique et à gauche, l’océan Indien.

So, there we go … I wanted to go to the ends of the earth and so I did!

Opposite: Antartica just over 6000 km, as I head South the Atlantic Ocean to the right and on the left, the Indian Ocean.

En fait c’est pas tout à fait vrai. Le point le plus au Sud de l’Afrique est le Cap des Aiguilles à environ cent cinquante kilomètres à l’Est. Et en plus pour dire ça, je me trouve à Cape Point, le cap le plus au Sud de la péninsule du Cap et non au Cap de Bonne Espérance qui est le plus au Sud de la côte Ouest de la péninsule.

Le Cap de Bonne Espérance est depuis le temps des longues expéditions navales, quand les bateaux venant de l’Equateur tanguaient sous les tempêtes de l’Atlantique, le cap à tenir et à espérer franchir pour enfin se retrouver dans les mers plus calmes de l’océan Indien, et naviguer vers le Nord Est …

Pour ma part, le dernier mètre a été un petit tour de roue pour l’Alocomotive mais un grand tour de roue pour le Grand Raid : c’est aussi le point de demi-tour. Et si dans ce voyage, l’aller a largement dépassé toutes mes espérances, la route à venir, qui je pense sera encore pleine d’aventures, réduira donc chaque jours la distance entre le bout de cette ligne rouge sur mon blog et mon cher pays natal     (Quand te reverrai-je …).

Mon seul espoir sera donc de vous y retrouver en forme pour vous faire un gros béco !

Mais avant de vous montrer le Cap, une petite rétrospective sur les dernières journées en Namibie.

Bon, Windhoek, j’vous en ai déjà parlé : y a de la bonne bière et ça aussi ça a été un cap à passer. Y a fallu m’arracher de là…

In fact this is not quite true, as the most southern point in South Africa is the Cape Agulhas which is about one hundred and fifty miles to the east. Yet I am at Cape Point, which is the most Southern Cape of the Cape Peninsula and the Cape of Good Hope is actually the southernmost part of the west coast of the peninsula.

The Cape of Good Hope was in the time of long naval expeditions, when the ships from the Ecuador storms in the Atlantic, they crossed the course hoping to find calmer seas in the Indian Ocean and navigated to the North East…

For my part, the last meter was a small turn of the wheel only for a great ride but a locomotive wheel for the Grand Raid: This being also the point of turn. In this trip I have gone farther than exceeding my expectations, I’m sure that the road that lies ahead is filled with much adventure. So each day I will reduce the distance between the tip of the red line on my blog and my dear home (When I shall see you again…)

My only hope will be to find you all in good shape to give you all a big kiss.

But before I show you the Cape, here is just a little retrospective of my last days in Namibia.

Well, Windhoek, which I have already spoken about, where you find good beer and that it was a hard place to cross.

J’en avais profité pour faire la vidange moteur, changer les filtres et faire changer mes joints spi de fourche.

Me voilà donc en direction du Sud Ouest.

Et là, juste à la sortie de Windhoek, un truc étrange … Alors que je n’y prête jamais attention, mon regard est attiré par mon compteur … Stupéfaction : rien que des 7 ! Faut que j’m’arrête pour immortaliser 7 série de 7 !

I have the opportunity to make the oil change for my engine, the filter change and the oil seal changed for my fork too.

So from here I’m heading South West.

And then, just outside Windhoes, a strange thing happened. While I don’t usually pay attention, my eyes were drawn to my counter…. In a daze I saw: only 7! In order to capture my full attention, I stopped and all I saw was 7 with a series of 7!

Après avoir quasiment traversé ce continent plein de magie et de croyances mystérieuses me v’la à chercher une raison mystique à ce soudain appel télépathique de mon tableau de bord pour me montrer des 7 !

Moi qui ai bénéficié de la solidarité chrétienne dans les missions catho, c’est un signe du divin … Faut que j’aille confesser mes 7 péchés capitaux ?? Non … Depuis le temps…

J’ai beau chercher : les 7 samouraïs, les 7 mercenaires,  James Bond zéro zéro 7, J’vais croiser Blanche Neige et les 7 nains ?? N’importe quoi !!

J’ai pô cassé mon rétro, c’est pas 7 ans de malheur qui m’attendent …

Même si ici, c’est magnifique, j’suis pô dans une des 7 merveilles du monde

Cinq 7 c’est cinq semaines (7 jours) mais que va-t-il se passer ?

Ma nouvelle huile moteur est trop acide ? Faut atteindre un Ph de 7 ??

Et la septième planète fut la terre !

Bon rien à faire, j’trouve pô, j’déclare forfait ! Alors je continue à avancer en espérant que les futures bières seront moins nocives …

Par contre j’organise un grand jeu concours ! Si quelqu’un a une idée sur la signification de cette série de 7… L’auteur de la meilleur réponse se verra offrir un superbe Tee Shirt du Grand Raid ! Si si

After almost crossing this continent full of magic and mysterious beliefs, here we go, trying to seek a mystical reason for this sudden telepathic call that my dashboard is showing me… 7!

I who benefited from the solidarity Catholic Christian missions, is it a sign of the divine?… Do I have to confess my seven deadly sins?? Since I have had no time…

I’m looking for: the seventh samurai, seven mercenaries, James Bond zero zero seven, I’ll cross Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs??? Anything?

I broke my back, this can’t be seven years of bad luck waiting for me…

While, one thing is for certain, I’m in the spot of the 7 wonders of the world

Five seven in five weeks (7 days) but what will happen?

Now I’m questioning, is my new engine oil to acidic? Must I achieve a pH of 7??

And then the seventh planet was the Earth!

Well this is good enough than anything, so I found my package and I continued to move forward in the hope that the future will be less harmful with the beers…

The tracks since the start of Namibia were superb!

Arrivé à l’entrée du Park de Sossusvlei, on me dit que c’est interdit aux motos ! Il me reste encore 64 kms à faire pour voir les dunes. Ça c’est pas cool !

Je reste une nuit au Camping du Park en espérant trouver quelqu’un qui s’y rend le lendemain en 4×4 et accepterait un passager de plus mais sans succès. Il me faudra donc payer plus de 30 € pour faire l’aller retour dans une voiture du Park mais franchement ça valait le coup.

Une mer de dunes immenses à perte de vue.

So as I arrived at the entrance to Sossusvlei Park, I was told that it was forbidden to ride motorcycles in the Park! Here I am, still having 64 km to go until I see the dunes… that just is not cool!

I stayed a night at the Camping park, hoping to find someone who will be going there the next day who would accept one more passenger in their 4 x 4, but I had no success. I will have to pay more than 30 euros for the round trip in the car park, but in the end of the day, it was damn worth it.

A vast sea of sand dunes…. in sight, nothing else.

Il y a très longtemps, la rivière Tsauchab rejoignait l’océan Atlantique. Aujourd’hui asséchée, elle ne parvient que les rares années de fortes pluies à créer un lac entre les dunes qui lui font barrage. Un peu plus loin, le Dead Vlei, ancien lac définitivement enclavé entre les montagnes de sable et qui comme son nom l’indique ne recevra plus jamais d’eau. Le décor est impressionnant : des squelettes d’arbre figés sur un sol blanchâtre constitué d’une croûte salée. Un vrai paradoxe entre un paysage à la fois magnifique et apocalyptique.

Quant à l’escalade des dunes, c’est du sport mais tout là haut, la vue est grandiose.

Long ago, the Tsauchab River joined the Atlantic Ocean, but now nothing but dryness. It fails to create a lake due to the every few years of heavy rainfall, as between the dunes there is a dam.

A little later, the Dead Vlei, a former lake permanently wedged between the mountains of sand and as its name indicates it will never water. The décor of impressive skeletons frown in trees on a white floor consisting of a salt crust. A paradox between a landscape, beautiful yet apocalyptic.

As for climbing the dunes, what a sport, but up there the view was breath-taking.

Après une nuit dans le petit village de Betta où avant de me coucher je démonterai, pour le regraisser, l’axe de mon démarreur qui commence à avoir du mal, c’est ballot …

After a night in the small village, Betta, before bed I greased the axis of my starter as it started to give me a bit of trouble.

Je continue vers le Sud en direction du Fish River Canyon.

I continued the next day towards the South in the direction of the Fish River Canyon.

Le spectacle y est encore une fois à tomber par terre.

Comment sur des millénaires, une rivière a pu creuser la roche sur une profondeur atteignant parfois plus de 500 m ??

The view was once again magnificent.

For almost, a millennia, the river could dig the rock to a depth almost reaching more than 500m!

Le Fish River Canyon et le deuxième plus grand canyon du monde après le Grand Canyon du Colorado.

Sur plus de 160 kms, la Fish River a créé une faille profonde et torturée, au fond de laquelle on aperçoit ses reflets.

Over 160 km, the Fish River has created a deep rift and tortured at the bottom where you can see its reflections.

L’érosion capricieuse de la roche dessine des formes spectaculaires à perte de vue.

The erosion of the rock draws different types of spectacular sight.

C’est pas de tout ça. Je ne suis plus qu’à quelques dizaines de kms de la dernière frontière avant d’arriver au Cap.

Celle-ci est matérialisée par le Fleuve Orange et juste avant de le franchir, je retomberai sous le charme d’un petit camping.

Un endroit magnifique où pour la modique somme de 8 Euros par jour, je bénéficierai d’une piscine surplombant le fleuve. De l’autre côté : l’Afrique du Sud !

It’s not all that, just a few dozen kilometres from the last border before arriving in Cape Town.

It’s evidential by looking at the Orange River before crossing that I feel under the charm of a small campsite.

A wonderful place for a whopping 8 euros per day, a place where I will have a swimming pool overlooking the river… and on the other side: South Africa!

Décidément, la Namibie aura été du début à la fin, le pays le plus difficile à traverser, tant chaque arrêt m’aura donné envie de poser mes bagages quelques temps.

Avant de continuer et comme d’ici le Cap, je n’aurai plus que du goudron sous les pneus, je change mon pneu d’occase qui peut encore faire plus de 1500 bornes sur gravier avec celui offert par Yohann à Swakopmund.

Certainly, Namibia has been the most difficult country to cross from beginning to end! At each stop, gave me the temptation of stopping it all for some time.

As I continue before reaching the Cape, I no longer have tar under the tyres, with my secondhand tyres offered by Yohann Swakopmund, I can still do more than 1500 terminals on gravel.

Passage frontière : très facile.

Après quelques heures à rouler, une brûlure terrible à l’intérieur de mon coude gauche.

Je m’arrête, enlève mon blouson : une abeille est rentrée dans ma manche et m’a piqué !

J’enlève le dard et continue après avoir dansé 5 minutes sur le bas côté. Je n’aurais pas cru que la seule agression que j’aurais eu à subir de la part d’un Wild Animal jusqu’au Cap aurait été celle d’une abeille. Le soir même j’aurai une marque rouge de plus de 15 cm de large…

Ma première nuit en Afrique du Sud se passera dans la brousse.

Enfin, brousse est un grand mot. Après avoir traversé ClanWilliam, je tourne à gauche sur une petite piste qui rejoint la rivière Olifant où je trouverai un superbe endroit pour planter la tente.

Border crossing: very easy.

After a couple of hours driving, a felt a terrible burning coming from my left elbow.

I stopped, took off my jacket and I had realised that a bee tucked into my sleeve and stung me!

I removed the stinger and yet it continues to dance around for 5 minutes of its back. I couldn’t believe that the only aggression I would have had to suffer from a Cape wild animal, would be that of a bee. That evening, I examined the spot and I had a red mark over 15cm wide.

My first night in South Africa… in the bush.

Actually, Bush is a big word. After crossing Clanwilliam, I turned left on to a small path that joins the Olifants River where I found a great plact to pitch the tent.

Le lendemain, dernière étape pour Cape Town. Ici, des plantations de blé (ou d’avoine) partout. C’est bien la première fois que je ferai un rhume des foins au mois de novembre !

The next day, marking my last step to Cape Town. Here all you can see is fields of wheat or oats everywhere. This is the first time in my life I suffered hay fever in November!

Et soudain, Cape Town. La Table Mountain avec un nuage accroché dessus.

 Suddenly, Cape Town… The Table Mountain covered with a heavy cloud over it.

Je continue vers le centre et entre par hasard dans le deuxième plus ancien pub de la ville où je rencontrerai Bruce, un S’Angel.

Très sympa et pas du tout «bloqué Harley», il m’emmènera au Tourisme Info pour prendre une carte de la ville et me conseillera d’aller planter ma tente plus vers le Sud de la Péninsule, vers les villages de Muizenberg ou Simonstown.

C’est ce que je ferai après un délicieux repas dans le Fish and Chips du coin pour enfin, le lendemain, arriver au Cap de Bonne Espérance.

I enter the center, and by chance between the second oldest pub in the city I meet Bruce, a S’Angel.

 Very friendly and not at all “Harley blocked”, He took me to the Tourism information center where I was given a map of the city and advised me to take my tent to the south of the peninsula, to the towns of Muizenburg and Simonstown.

After a delicious meal at the local Fish and Chips, I finally head off in the direction I was told and the next day I arrived at the Cape of Good Hope.

Depuis je suis retourné en ville, j’y ai trouvé une auberge Backpacker où j’ai pu entrer la moto dans la petite cour.

Once returning to town, I found a Backpackers hostel, where I could park my bike in the courtyard.

Je compte rester ici quelques jours pour visiter la ville, monter sur la Table Mountain et aller …. boire une bière au Waterfront…

My plans are to stay here for a few days and visit the city, climb Table Mountain and hell yes, drink a beer at the Waterfront.

My friend from Lyon, Michael is a faithful listener of the show “Hello Earth” on the radio station “The Moove” had sent an email to them telling them about The Grand Raid.

Monday, 8 October as expected, I continued South with Katharina and Ingmar. A very sandy dirt track to Waterberg. Once we arrived, we set up tents 3 km from the Park entrance.

A l’intérieur les tarifs de camping sont exorbitants alors vive le Bush Camp…

Inside the Park, camping fees are outrageous to stay in a Bush Camp.

Le lendemain très tôt, nous entamons l’ascension de la montagne. Une randonnée de près de 4 heures dans un paysage hors du commun. Le Waterberg est une sorte de falaise rouge plantée dans un décor désertique. C’est magnifique !

Early the next day, we started to climb the mountain, a hike up for about 4 hours with an unsual landscape. The Waterberg is a kind of red cliff planted in a dessert setting. It’s absolutely magnificent!

Mes deux compagnons continuant vers le sud, je les quitterai en début d’après midi pour bifurquer en direction du nord via Outjo. Là-bas, dans un camp site qui avait attiré mon regard grâce aux deux vieilles épaves à l’entrée, je rencontrerai Bernard.

My two companions continuing South, where as I headed north via Outjo in the afternoon. There I came across a camp site that caught my eye, thanks to two old wrecks at the entrance, this is where I met Bernard.

Français retraité Bernard a construit une maison avec des amis sur les terres de la petite propriété fermière de 500 hectares sur laquelle est installé le camping. Ici les farmers peuvent être propriétaires de plus de 3500 hectares et dans le sud une seule ferme peut atteindre 10000 hectares !!!

Bernard, a retired Frenchman, who built a house with friends on a land small holding farm of 500 hectares, which is installed on the campsite. Here farmers can own more than 3,500 hectares in the South and one farm can reach up to 10,000 hectares!

C’est pourquoi dans cette zone, les routes sont bordées de grillage tout du long.

Avant-hier, pour atteindre le Waterberg, nous devions régulièrement ouvrir des barrières, passant successivement à travers les différentes propriétés.

Très bonne soirée chez Bernard qui m’invitera à boire l’apéro et à manger de l’antilope.

Je suis à 100 kms au sud du Park d’Etosha. Ce serait dommage de ne pas aller y faire un tour.

N’ayant pas envie d’y dépenser une fortune dans un safari je me contenterai, suivant les conseils de Bernard, d’aller passer une nuit dans le premier camping à 17 kms après l’entrée. Problème : interdiction d’y aller en moto…

Le lendemain, j’abandonnerai donc ma moto à l’entrée du park et ne prendrai que ma tente pour atteindre en stop ce fameux camping.

Merci au passage aux sympathiques couples Namibiens qui ont eu la gentillesse de m’y amener.

Là-bas, quelques 40 mètres derrière un mur de protection, se trouve un petit lac où viennent s’abreuver les animaux à longueur de journée. Autant dire que l’on peut rester des heures à contempler en silence les va-et-vient de nombreuses espèces.

That is why all the roads are lined with fences along the way.

The day before yesterday, on the way to Waterberd, we were opening gates and passing through on our way without taking any notice moving through these properties.

That evening I spent it with Bernard, who invited me to drink cocktails and eat game.

I’m 100 km South of Etosha Park, it would be a shame if I didn’t take the time to go and have a look.

I didn’t want to spend a fortune on a safari, so instead I’ll follow Bernards advice and spend a night camping in the first 17km in the Park. Once again the Problem: Motorbikes are banned…

The next day I abandoned my bike at the entrance of the park and just took my tent to reach this famous camp stopover.

Thank you to the friendly Namibian couples who were kind enough to give me a lift there.

There, 40 metres behind a protective fence, is a small lake where animals come to drink all day long. Enough to say that you can spend hours watching these different species silently going back and forth.

Le lendemain de toutes petites pistes m’amèneront à Odjikondo puis à Opuwo où je m’arrêterai pour casser la croûte alors que plusieurs mini tornades s’abattent sur la ville …

The day after, the tiny tracks lead me to Odjikondo and then to Opuwo, where I stopped for a snack while several mini tornadoes descended on the city …

Je suis dans un secteur peuplé d’Himbas, surnommés « peuple rouge ».

Cela vient de la mixture à base de terre ocre et d’huile avec laquelle les femmes s’enduisent le corps et les cheveux, se protégeant ainsi du soleil et des moustiques. Leur coiffure quant à elle renseigne sur leur statut : mariée, célibataire, fille ou garçon pour les petits. Comme les Sans, ils vivent en harmonie avec la nature.

J’en croiserai même une avec un Berguenard !!!

I am in a populated area of Himba, nicknamed « red people. »

This comes from the mixture containing ocher and oil with which women smear their bodies and hair, protecting them from the sun and mosquitoes. Their hair is an indication of  their status: married, single, male or female or children,  they live in harmony with nature.

Il est 15h quand je décide malgré la chaleur de continuer vers les chutes d’Epupa.

ça fait environ 8000 kms (bel exploit pour eux) que je roule avec les pneus installés à Kinshasa (ceux que m’avait amenés Léa et Aurélien à Pointe Noire, Salut !)

J’en profite au passage pour remercier JJ qui lors de la commande de ceux-ci avait insisté pour que je prenne encore des pneus tout terrain. A l’époque j’espérais avoir mon visa pour l’Angola et jugeais pouvoir me contenter de pneus mixtes … C’était sans compter la Nationale 1 qui n’était pas encore au programme … J’préfère pas y penser avec des pneus mixtes …

Bref, maintenant ils sont quasi sur la corde et ils doivent tenir encore quelques 1000 bornes jusque Windhoek.

Le problème c’est qu’un pneu usé, ça crève vite… Et c’est ce qui ne tardera pas à arriver à peine à 30 km d’Opuwo… En plein cagnard.

Je mets deux mèches dans le trou… mais j’ai plus assez de colle et ça tient pas vraiment. Impossible de continuer. Heureusement à Opuwo, il y a un garage qui répare les pneus : le tout c’est d’y retourner.

Plus d’une heure plus tard, devant m’arrêter tous les 3 kms pour regonfler, j’y suis.

15h is when I decided to continue despite the heat to Epupa Falls.

It’s about 8000 km (great achievement for them) as I have ridden with my tyres installed in Kinshasa (those that had brought me to Leah and Aurélien Pointe Noire, Hi!)

I take this opportunity to thank JJ, due to the advice given when ordering tyres to take more off-road tyres. At the time I was hoping to get my visa ready for Angola and was contemplating mixed tyres both off and on road… This is without counting the N1 (National 1), which was not yet on the agenda, I couldn’t even think about doing this trip with mixed tyres.

Anyway, now we are almost on the line and they took a few terminals until 1000 km in Windhoek.

The problem is that a worn tyre can burst fast and this is what would have happen soon after only 30 km from Opuwo… I dodged that one!

I blocked to holes, didn’t have really enough glue to hold them down, and was unable to continue.

More than an hour later, stopping every 3 km to inflate my tyres, I’m final here.

Le gars remet deux mèches et j’en profite pour acheter de nouvelles mèches et un tube de colle. Il me conseille de revenir le lendemain pour coller un patch à l’intérieur du pneu.

Une nuit au camping et finalement, la pression de mon pneu tenant bon, je pars aux chutes sans y retourner. Comme c’est un cul de sac (bon 180 kms aller), je serai de retour ici le lendemain, et maintenant je suis équipé de nouvelles mèches et de colle au cas où …

La route est magnifique : pour moi ce sont les premières vraies montagnes de Namibie. Superbe !

The guy gave two parts and I want to buy new puncture rubber and a tube of glue. He advises me to return the next day to stick a patch inside the tyre.

Overnight camping and finally have the right tyre pressure, I will definitely go back without fail. Atleast I’ll then be equipped with new parts and glue just in case.

The road is magnificent: This is a first time for me, to be in the real mountains of Namibia, it’s Superb!

Quant aux chutes, certes beaucoup plus petites que Victoria Falls, j’ai adoré.

The small waterfalls, much smaller than Victoria Falls, but still fascinating to me, I loved it!

Là-bas, il y a beaucoup de villages Himbas et je m’arrêterai dans l’un d’entre eux.

Here there are many Himba villages, I will definitely make a stop to visit.

De retour à Opuwo, la réparation de mon pneu a tenu le coup et je décide de continuer vers le sud.

Back to Opuwo, time to repair my tyre, after that I continued south.

Les paysages sont splendides ! Des montagnes, une superbe piste de gravier sur laquelle il m’arrivera parfois de me faire doubler par une autruche !! Merde, c’est que ça tient la route sur le gravier… (bon on dira que je roule lentement pour admirer le décor …)

With the scenery so beautiful. The mountains, a beautiful gravel runway on which I will probably give myself a scare. Shit, that is if my tyres hold on the gravel roads. ( All I can say is, I’ll drive slowly to admire the scenery)

Après une nuit en brousse du côté de Sesfontein, je continue vers le Brantberg, la plus haute montagne de Namibie où se trouve la fameuse White Ladie : une peinture rupestre découverte en 1917 et datée de 16000 ans !!

After a night in the bush on the side of Sesfontein, I continued onwards to Brantberd, the highest mountain in Namibia where you can find the famous White Lady: a cave painting discovered in 1917 and dated back to 16 000 years!

Je sympathiserai avec les guides et passerai la nuit à coté de la maison de l’un d’eux, Justus, qui habite dans le village se trouvant à 500 m de là.

I made friends with the guides and spent the night next to the house of one of them, named Justus, who lives in the village about 500 metres away.

Excellente soirée ! Et un décor extraordinaire. Ici les locaux peuvent construire une petite maison où ils veulent !! Pas d’achat de terrain ni de taxe d’habitation !!!

What a great evening, in an extraordinary setting. Here locals can build small homes wherever they like, with not worrying about purchasing land or pay tax on housing.

Le lendemain, mon pneu est à plat ! Merde…

J’y remets deux mèches et réussis seulement à rouler 20 kms. Je remets 3 mèches et même résultat au bout de 30 kms. Cette fois-ci 5 mèches dans le même trou !!! Et ça a l’air de tenir.

J’arrive dans la zone désertique longeant la côte. Sur à peine 30 kms, la température passe de 35 à 9 degrés !! Et l’humidité est terrible.

The next day, I wake up and guess what… my tyre is flat! Shit …

I successfully crossed to strands about 20 km. I glued and closed the whole at least 7 times, it eventually holds.

I arrived in the desert area along the coast. In just 30 km, the temperature going from 35 degrees down to a drastic 9! With terrible humidity!

Pour la première fois depuis mon départ : une escargonite !

A peine 15 mn plus tard j’aperçois sur le sable des véhicules complètement délirants, énormes camions citernes avec des mitrailleuses : c’est Mad Max ici !!! Ou Quoi ??

Je ne croyais pas si bien dire ! Me voilà en plein tournage du «Mad Max 4». Sortie sur les grands écrans en 2013…  si vous voyez un abruti sur sa BM qui passe en arrière plan… cherchez pas …

For the first time since I have left, I feel like a snail!

Barely 15 minutes later, I see vehicles in front of me, huge trucks with machine guns: Crazy!! Has Mad Max arrived or what?

As I look I am really in the middle of the production filming “Mad Max 4”. Out on the big screen in 2013… if you see the movie you will probably see some fool on a BMW in the background!

Arrivé au stand de tournage, on me dit : « Interdiction de faire des photos », trop tard !

J’arrive à Henties Bay transi de froid. Tout le monde porte la polaire et l’écharpe. J’entre dans un café et on me sert un chocolat chaud !! Un chocolat chaud… Va falloir que j’pense à réparer mes poignées chauffantes…

Je ressors et vais fouiller dans le fond de mon sac polochon : un sous vêtement de moto et des gants d’hiver s’y trouvent, abandonnés depuis 8 mois comme de vieux torchons que je n’aurais pas voulu jeter au cas où j’aurais eu besoin d’un chiffon pour cirer mes bottes…

J’enfile ma tenue de frigoriste et je repars vers le nord pour aller voir les phoques !

J’en avais entendu parler j’sais plus où…

En fait les phoques, c’est bien en photo : ça pue !  ça gueule ! Beurk !!

Arrived at the booth location, I was told, “Photos are not allowed:… all I can think of is, “too late.”

In Henties Bay it is freezing cold. Everyone wearing fleece jackets and scarfs, I arrived at a café and I was served hot chocolate! Hot chocolate! I think I’m going to have to increase my grips and put heating on them.

I’m searching and rummaging through my backpack: motorcycle underwear, winter gloves, ones which I forgot about for the last 8 months, I guess they will come in handy now!

I put on my suit for the refrigerated conditions and I left heading north to see the seals!

The fact is… the seals might be a beautiful picture, but hell does it stink! Yuck!

Je retourne boire un chocolat chaud à Henties Bay avant de redescendre sur Swakopmund.

Là-bas, il fait moins froid. Faut dire qu’il est midi maintenant. Mais ça caille quand même.

Devant un coffee shop, j’aperçois une BM R 1150 GS. Je me gare à côté : sortent Hugo et Martin.

C’est la moto de Martin. Hugo est le président des «Ventulus», un club moto local et a lui aussi une R 1150 GS dans son garage.

I went back to drink a hot chocolate at Henties Bay before returning to Swakopmund.

At least here it isn’t as cold, I must say it’s noon now, but that hot chocolate is still curdling!

In front of a coffee shop, I noticed a BMW R 1150 GS. I park next to it: Hugo and Martin come out.

This is Martin’s motorcycle. Hugo is the president of « Ventulus », a local motorcycle club and also has a R 1150 GS in his garage.

Lorsque je lui montrerai mon pneu arrière, il m’annoncera qu’il a un bon plan pour moi.

Un de ses amis a acheté une dizaine de pneus d’occase à une bande de motards d’Afrique du Sud qui passaient par là et changeaient leurs Karoo contre des pneus route pour retourner chez eux par le goudron.

«Là, j’ai pas le temps mais reviens ici demain à 8h et je t’y emmène»

Une nuit dans le camp site le plus cheap depuis le début (seulement 20 N$ soit 2 euros !!) et j’y retourne.

Je passerai la journée avec Hugo.

Tout d’abord il m’amène chez Yohann, un de ses amis qui tient un magasin de moto. C’est juste histoire d’aller voir le prix d’un pneu neuf : 250 € !! C’est du délire !! Il ajoute devant son ami qu’ici c’est hors de prix et qu’à Cape Town, les prix sont plus raisonnables …

When I showed him my back tyre, I then realised that he had a good plan for me!

A friend bought a dozen secondhand tyres to the motorcycle gang from South Africa, as passing through they changed their tyres from the Karoo roads to use tar roads to return home.

“I don’t have any time right now, but come here tomorrow at 8am and I’ll bring you some tyres.

Super!

Another night in the camp site as cheap as the beginning (about 20 dollars or say like 2 euros!) The next day I went back and ended up spending the day with Hugo.

«Nous ! On n’a pas le choix mais toi tu y vas alors attend d’être là-bas pour en acheter un neuf»

Nous prendrons sa voiture pour aller à Walvis Bay (30 kms de là) où je trouverai pour 30 euros un pneu d’occase.

“Here you go, we don’t have a choice but they’ll get you there but one you arrive you will have to buy new ones”

We took the car and went to Walvis Bay (30 km away) where I Bought the tyres for 30 euros second hand.

Il peut bien faire encore 2000 bornes de gravier minimum. Au retour Yohann, pas rancunier du tout, me l’installera gratos et m’offrira un autre pneu arrière d’occase ! Un pneu route pouvant encore faire aussi ces 2000 bornes sur goudron…

You could do about 2000 km on gravel at the minimum. At this stage I decided to take a second on road tyre that could do about 2000 km on tar.

Hugo me donne un autocollant de son club et me demande de lui envoyer une photo de la machine avec la tour Eiffel derrière. J’suis po pressé de l’faire mais je l’frais mon pote !

En installant le pneu, je me rends compte que la soudure de Monsieur le Pasteur de Yanéné est en train de lâcher (tant pis pour ceux qui suivent pas …). Hugo m’amène chez son ami Martin qui a un garage auto et un poste à souder. Le tout sera remis dans l’ordre en moins de 20 mn et encore une fois « For free Man ! And Have A Good trip !».

Hugo gave me a sticker from the club and asked me to send a picture of the machine with the Eiffel Tower behind it! I’m in a hurry to send him that, but I’ll have to charge.

I was fitting the tyre I realised that the welding machine was giving in. so Hugo took me to a friend called Martin who lent me his auto welding machine. Everything, will be fixed in under 20 minutes and again “For free Man! And have a good trip!”

Je ne reprendrai la route pour Windhoek que le lendemain.

Après presque 100 kms dans un froid terrible et un brouillard à couper au couteau, j’arrive dans un paysage encore plus hallucinant que tout ce que j’ai vu ici !

Des montagnes légèrement boisées sur des kms à n’en plus finir ! Et avec une piste de gravier nickel !

I couldn’t take the road to Windhoek the next day as after almost 100 km in terrible cold, the fog was so bad you could cut it with a knife.

I arrived in a landscape even more amazing than everything I’ve seen here!

Lightly wooded mountains km on the horizon km to no end! And a gravel road, awesome!

Arrivé à Windhoek je rejoindrai mes deux amis Sabine et Peter rencontrés à Brazzaville. Eux, ils ont eu leur visa pour l’Angola. Après échange de mail, ils m’avaient donné l’adresse du «Carboard Box Backpackers», un endroit bien cool avec bar, piscine, pour 7 euros petit dèj inclus…

Nous y rejoindrons Katharina et Peter accompagnés de leurs amis Allemands ayant atterri la veille et nous passerons encore une bonne soirée à boire de la bière, avant qu’ils ne reprennent la route le lendemain vers le nord.

A Windhoek, y a une concession BMW. J’y vais juste pour faire un tour et me renseigner sur les prix, et le patron voyant mes deux joints spi en chmulte (gauche et droite cette fois-ci) m’en sort deux du tiroir et me donne rendez-vous pour les changer lundi à 7H30 !

J’achèterai également filtre à huile, à essence. Des frais pour la machine mais franchement je n’ai pas à me plaindre jusqu’à présent …

Voilà, ici… c’est plutôt cool alors je reste encore un peu.

L’été commence dans 2 mois à Cape Town… Faudrait pas qu’j’arrive en avance !!

Ma balise a déconné au début du mois et il y a quelques jours, mais tout est rentré dans l’ordre.

Eventually I arrived in Windhoek, I joined two friends Sabine and Peter that I met in Brazzaville. They received their visas for Angola. After an exchange of mail, they gave me the address of Cardboard Box Backpackers”, a very cool place with a funky bar, swimming pool for only 7 euros with  breakfast included.

Here we will join up with Peter and Katharina with their German friends who landed the day before and we had an amazing evening drinking beer before hitting the road to the north.

In Windhoek, there is a BMW dealership. So I went to have a look and see if I would price some parts, and the owner saw my two oil seals that have had it and gave me an appointment for Monday 7h30 to change them!

So I also bought an oil filter, and fuel filter, although expensive, I could really not complain thus far…

Summer starts in the next two months in Cape Town… Don’t want to arrive too much in advance!

Encore un passage frontière et me voilà en Namibie. En quittant la douane, je laisse mon CPD dans mon sac de réservoir, sur ma carte.

Sunday, 30 September. I left Zambia, Another border crossing to go and I’ll be in Namibia.

Etant sur un beau goudron tout neuf, j’estime ne pas avoir besoin de la consulter, persuadé d’être sur la route de Rudum qui traverse le Caprivi. Ce sera en arrivant à la frontière du Botswana, 65 kms plus loin que je réaliserai mon erreur.

Première boulette après 32000 kms depuis le départ. Faut dire que j’ai une carte et un GPS fiables, quand je les utilise…

Quand j’arrive dans le village de Kongola je vois un panneau « Camp Site » : j’y vais.

Là-bas, rien d’autre que des emplacements pour planter une tente près de la rivière. Je passerai la nuit à 3 m des hippopotames, sursautant parfois quand ils se mettront à gueuler …

Le lendemain, je salue un couple de Sud Af, Petro et Neels arrivés dans la nuit à bord de leur Defender, et échange avec eux sur la mauvaise nuit causée par le voisinage un peu bruyant, puis je reprends la route.

On a tar road now, in good shape, but persuaded myself to get onto the road that crosses the Caprivi Rudum. Will be getting there near the Botswana border, 65 km later I realised this was a mistake.

First of all, after 32000 km from the start I have had a very reliable map and GPS when I used it…. But after that a little lost.

When I arrived in the village of Kongola I saw a sign “ Camp Site” so there I go.

There was nothing but slots for a tent near the river. I spent the night 3 metres away  from hippos where sometimes I was startled when they started to grunt.

The next day, I welcomed a couple from South Africa, Neels and Petro. They pushed through the night in their Defender and we exchanged maps. We spent the night in the wrong neighbourhood due to the noise.

Après un peu plus d’une heure, je m’arrête sur le côté pour photographier un troupeau d’éléphants et je vois arriver un énorme camion qui s’arrêtera juste derrière moi en klaxonnant. A côté du chauffeur : Neels qui m’appelle brandissant sa courroie.

«La courroie a lâché à peine à 30 kms du camping ! Je vais essayer de trouver un camion pour nous tracter à Bagani mais ma femme est toute seule dans la voiture, à environ 75 kms derrière nous !! »

En fait il me demande de rebrousser chemin pour lui tenir compagnie car d’après le conducteur du camion il y aurait parfois des gens dangereux sur cette route et une femme seule, c’était pas prudent…

Bon, après qu’il ait ajouté que dans le Defender, il y a un frigo avec de la bière et du biltong (cette spécialité de viande séchée de l’Af australe), j’ai vite pris conscience que cette femme était réellement en danger…

Neels reviendra vers 13 h. avec une fourgonnette. Il m’explique que le seul endroit où il peut trouver une nouvelle courroie est Windhoek, qu’il amène la voiture dans un camping à Bagani (à environ  150 kms d’ici), et qu’il y restera le temps que la courroie arrive de la Capitale. Il m’invite à y rester également cette nuit pour me remercier d’avoir mangé son biltong. Heuhhh d’avoir protégé sa femme d’une éventuelle agression…

After a little over an hour, I stopped on the side of the road to photograph a herd of elephants coming and I see a huge truck behind me honking. On the driver’s side: Neels calling me!

With is belt broken, just 30 km from the campsite,” I’ll try to find a tow truck for us to get to Bagani but my wife is all alone in the car, about 75 miles behind us!” said Neels

Actually he was asking me to turn around and keep her company because he was with a truck driver and left out on the road a woman alone… it’s not safe.

Well, after asking me, he added that in the Defender there was a fridge stocked with beer and biltong (dried meat which is a South African speciality), I realised quickly that this woman is in real danger…

Neels returned at 13h with a van. He explains to us that the only place where he could get a new belt was in Windhoek, so they managed to get the car to the camping site in Bagani (about 150km from here) and the car will stay there until they can get the new belt. So he invited to me spend the night with them to thank me for protecting his wife, there could have been a possible attack. I also thanked him for the delicious biltong.

There, right next to our site, was Katharina and Ingmar and a German couple ona motorcycle!

Ils ont quitté leur pays en mars 2011, sont passés par l’Est de l’Afrique. Ils ont fait la route jusqu’ici en deux fois car après une mauvaise chute Ingmar s’est cassé le pied, et ils ont été contraints de laisser leurs machines au Malawi, le temps de faire un aller retour en Allemagne de 9 mois.

Dans la soirée, j’annonce que je paye un verre pour fêter mon Anniversaire.

S’en suivra une excellente soirée en compagnie de mes 4 nouveaux amis, pendant laquelle j’aurai le privilège de finir la bouteille de Johnny Walker 12 ans d’âge de Neels et Petro, de fumer un excellent cigare amené par Ingmar depuis l’Allemagne, et surtout de terriblement progresser en Anglais.

They left their country in March 2011, passed through Eastern Africa. They managed this road twice, because after a bad fall Ingmar broke his foot and they were forced to leave the bikes in Malawi, and did a round trip in Germany for 9 months.

That evening, I announced that I was buying a round of drinks to celebrate my birthday.

I enjoyed the evening with my four great new friends, and had the privilege  to finish a bottle of Johnny Walker 12 years of age given to me by Petro and Neels, while smoking an excellent cigar from Ingmar.

Une journée de plus à glander dans ce superbe endroit et nous décidons avec Katharina et Ingmar de reprendre la route ensemble.

Ils visitent également la Namibie et attendent des amis qui arrivent le 19 octobre à Windhoek pour louer un 4×4 et continuer avec eux.

Pour info, ils roulent sur de magnifiques BMW G 650 xchallenge ! (Motos n’ayant pas eu le succès attendu et n’ayant été fabriquées qu’en un minimum d’exemplaires). 200 kg, 26 litres d’essence compris !!!! (Bon par contre pas de cardan mais une bonne vieille chaine, et comme on dit : là où y a de la chaine, y a pas de plaisir…)

I have one more day to hang out in the beautiful place and we all decided that we would head on the road together.

They also wanted to visit Namibia and were expecting friends to arrive in Windhoek on 19 October that were going to rent a 4×4 and carry on with them

For information, they were on a beautiful BMW G 650 XCHALLENGE! (This motorcycle don’t have the expected success and was discontinued) 200kg, including 26 litres of petrol!

Après avoir téléchargé ma carte «Trak 4 Africa» (achetée en Afrique du Sud par Isa et Oliv) dans le GPS d’Ingmar, nous emprunterons en alternance pistes de gravier et goudron.

After downloading my map “Trak 4 Africa” (Purchased in South Africa by Oliv and Isa) Ingmar decides we are taking alternative routes on gravel and tarmac.

Nous avons trouvé un superbe camping environ 80 kms avant Grootfontein, le Roy’s Camp. Un havre de paix où le soir on peut observer des élans, boire des bières au bar et faire trempette dans la piscine.

We found a great campsite about 80 km before Grootfontein, Roy’s Camp. A haven of peace in the evening you could observe moose, drinking beer at the bar and taking a dip in the pool.

Nous avons visité un village de Bushmen. Membres du peuple San rendu populaire grâce au film «Les dieux sont tombés sur la tête», ils ont été les premiers à vivre en Afrique Australe. Ils sont petits de taille et relativement clairs de peau. Après avoir longtemps été persécutés par d’autres ethnies, ils se sont réfugiés sur les terres arides du Kalahari où ils étaient les seuls à pouvoir survivre de chasse et de cueillette.

We visited a village of Bushmen, member of the San people made popular by the movie “The Gods must be crazy” there were the first tribe to live in Southern Africa. They are a small sized tribe and relatively light skinned. Having long been persecuted by other ethnic groups, they took refuge in the dry lands of the Kalahari, where they were the only ones to survive by hunting and gathering.

Leur langage est très reconnaissable grâce à une sorte de claquement de langue qu’ils font en parlant.

Their language is a recognisable kind Slang language they spoke

Ce qui m’impressionnera le plus chez eux, en dehors de leur gentillesse légendaire, ce sera la lenteur et la précision de leurs mouvements. J’ai eu le sentiment qu’ils utilisaient juste l’énergie nécessaire à accomplir le moindre de leurs gestes. Un vrai peuple Zen.

Dans leur langue, le mot «Merci» n’existe pas car rendre service est normal et les rend profondément et sincèrement heureux.

Avec Ingmar, nous aurons le droit d’apprendre à fabriquer un arc et même d’apprendre à s’en servir.

What impresses me most about them, apart from their legendary kindness, slow and precise movements. I had the feeling that they just used the energy required to perform any of their actions. True Zen people.

In their language, the word « Thank you » does not exist because a service is normal and makes them deeply and sincerely happy.

With Ingmar, we learnt how to make a bow and even learnt to use it.

Même si ce que nous avons vécu m’a laissé parfois le sentiment d’une mise en scène touristique, beaucoup de Bushmen continuent à vivre selon les traditions. Et qu’ils sont beaux !

Even if what we experienced left me sometimes feeling like a staged tourist, many Bushmen still live according to traditions. And they are beatufiul

Le lendemain, après une visite au plus gros météorite jamais tombé sur la terre, nous retournerons au Roy’s Camp pour y rester une journée.

The next day after visiting them, we came across the sighting where the biggest meteorite hit earth. After that we spent the rest of the day at Roy’s Camp.

Je continue à descendre vers le Sud avec mes deux compères et les quitterai peut-être dans quelques jours pour remonter vers le Nord : histoire d’aller narguer les angolais à la frontière et de voir les Epupa Falls avant de redescendre.

Cette semaine, j’ai également appris une triste nouvelle. Ghislain, un jeune motard français d’une vingtaine d’années qui m’avait envoyé un mail depuis N’Djamena, étant passé par la même mission catho où j’avais laissé mon adresse, a fait une mauvaise chute : genou cassé.

Résultat : «Fin de l’histoire» comme il dit.

En tout cas un beau parcours ! Et comme pour Ingmar qui s’est cassé le pied il y a quelques mois, tu seras vite remis d’aplomb, alors : à un de ces quatre sur la route l’ami !

We will go down south together, but then I might go up north to see if I can taunt the Angolan border and see the Epupa falls before returning.

This week, I also learnt the sad news, Ghislain, a French motorcyclist in his young twenties who had sent me an email from N’Djamena, having gond though the same mission, had a bad fall and has a broken knee. Result: “The end of his story” as he puts it.

In any case a nice track! And like Ingmar who broke his foot a few months ago, you’ll quickly get back up and then: and be one these four on the road buddy!
