Last Friday, the road led me to Tinerhir which  was quite varied. First to cross the Atlas with its winding roads and large reliefs carved into the rock.

A Ouarzazate, je ne ferai qu’une courte halte. (C’est une ville excessivement Touristique, et j’ai déjà acheté un Chèche à Marrakech ….

La route de Ouarzazate à Tinerhir traverse des paysages de plus en plus plats et désertiques bien qu’entourés de gros reliefs.

 Je suis arrivé assez tard. Il me faudra vraiment partir plus tôt le matin…

Je m’arrête devant «l’Hôtel des Gorges» pour remettre le pull que j’avais enlevé à Ouarzazate, et un gars vient me voir. Nous discutons 5 minutes et il m’invite à venir passer la nuit chez lui, mais je ne le sens pas vraiment.

C’est au moment où j’étais décidé à lui demander d’aller voir ailleurs si j’y suis, que le patron de l’Hôtel est sorti et s’est chargé de l’expédier à ma place, en pestiférant et en gesticulant les bras vers le ciel.

Après que nous ayons bien rigolé, il me propose une chambre pour 90 DH soit prés de 8€ et j’accepte sans hésiter.

Le lendemain, motivé par mes résolutions de la veille, je décollerai tôt. A 9h, après avoir pris un bon Ftorr (petit dej), je suis déjà sur la route pour les gorges de Todra.

Des paysages à couper le souffle, je monterai jusqu’à Agoudale où il y a encore un peu de neige sur les bas-côtés.

J’y ai mangé un délicieux Tajine. Par contre le restaurateur m’a déconseillé de redescendre par la piste qui mène aux gorges de Dadés. La veille deux motards hongrois avec des KTM bien plus légères que ma moto ont dû renoncer et faire demi tour : le tronçon du col est trop dangereux car encore enneigé et très boueux sur plus de 8 km.

I arrived quite late and I will really leave early in the morning ..

I stop in front of the « Hôtel des Gorges » to put the sweater that I had removed in Ouarzazate, and a guy comes up to me. We discuss 5 minutes and he invited me to spend the night with him, but I do not really feel like it.

That’s when I decided to ask him to go somewhere else if the boss of the hotel came out and took charge of the bike because I’m staying here… I could have big problems.

After we had a good laugh, he offered me a room for 90 DH or nearly € 8 and I accepted without hesitation.

The next day, motivated by my resolutions before, I left earlier. At 9 am, after a good Ftorr (breakfast), I’m already on the road to the Todra Gorge.

Landscapes breathtaking, I ascend up Agoudale where there is still some snow on the sides.

I ate a delicious tagine. As against the restorer advised me not to go down the path that leads to the Dades Gorge. The day two Hungarian bikers with lighter than my KTM motorcycle had to give up and turn around: the portion of the neck is too dangerous even for snowy and muddy over 8 km.

Une pluie fine commençant légèrement à tomber, je reprends vite la route par là où je suis arrivé jusqu’à Tamtattouchte, où une piste sans neige rejoint les gorges de Dadés.

Alors que je m’y engage, un jeune du Bled m’interpelle et me propose d’être mon guide moyennant la somme de 100 DH : « Tu vas te perdre ! Beaucoup de chemins non fléchés ! Ta moto est trop lourde, si elle tombe tu sauras pas la relever ! Dangereux mon ami !  …. »

J’aurai pas le temps de finir de lui dire qu’avec lui en plus sur la moto ce sera encore plus difficile, que je n’ai pas de casque pour lui et que la selle arrière supporte déjà mon sac de tente, qu’il aura sauté sur celle-ci en criant « J’y pèse 35 kilo M’sieur et ty roulera pas à plus de 5km/h avec li cailloux : Pas dy problème !!! »

Abdoul me fait bien marrer et nous voilà partis pour une expédition dans la montagne.

Je ne regretterai pas de l’avoir emmené car effectivement, Abdoul, ses 35 kg de muscles et son sens de l’orientation m’auront bien facilité la tâche lors d’une chute, quasi à l’arrêt, dans les pierres et lorsque la piste se confondait avec le décor …

Abdul makes me laugh and we went on an expedition in the mountains.

I do not regret to have taken as fact, Abdul, he’ss35 kgof muscles and sense of direction will be much easier for me during a fall, almost at a standstill, and when the stones track blended with the decor .

Arrivé à Msemrir, et après avoir réglé Abdoul, je reprendrai le goudron jusque Boumalne par les gorges de Dadés, encore plus vertigineuses que celles de Todra, pour y passer la nuit.

Dimanche 18, je retournerai sur Ouarzazate pour essayer de retrouver Sonia et Alexandre POUSSIN et leur groupe de randonneurs.

Arrivé là-bas je calerai  mon GPS sur les coordonnées de leur pause pique-nique, qu’Alex m’avait envoyées par mail. Cependant se sera grâce à beaucoup de chance que nous nous retrouverons : au moment où je m’arrêterai sur le bas-côté pour faire demi-tour, après avoir pris une mauvaise direction, c’est Alex qui, stationné juste derrière me klaxonna. Ils n’allaient finalement pas à l’emplacement initialement prévu, et je venais de m’arrêter juste à leur côté.

Ils m’inviteront à partager leur pique-nique, et je les accompagnerai jusqu’à Zaouit Sidi Salah. Là des chameliers les attendent, pour porter leurs bagages jusqu’à leur premier Bivouac dans les dunes de Tidri, lieu de départ de leur randonnée pédestre dans le Sud Marocain.

Malgré plusieurs essais il s’avèrera impossible de faire le chemin dans les dunes avec la moto vite ensablée dans le fech fech : sans leur aide pour m’en sortir, j’y serais encore…

Nous finirons par laisser la moto sur le dur à l’abri des regards, et je m’enfoncerai avec eux jusqu’au bivouac où nous avons passé un moment bien sympa. Le lendemain j’ai récupéré la moto après une petite marche solitaire dans le désert, juste avant le levé du soleil.

Sunday 18, I will return to Ouarzazate to try to find Sonia and Alexandre CHICK and their group of hikers.

I arrived there with my GPS coordinates at their picnic break, Alex had sent me by mail. However, I will be very lucky that we meet: when I stop on the side to turn around, having taken a wrong direction, that is when Alex, parked right behind me honked. They did not eventually go to the location originally planned, and I was just at their side.

They invite me to share their picnic, and I will accompany them to Zaouit Sidi Salah. There await the camel, to carry their luggage to their first bivouac in the dunes Tidri, the starting point of their hiking in southernMorocco.

Despite several attempts it will be impossible to make the path in the dunes with the bike quickly silted in the sand: without their help to get  me out, I’d still … be there.

We will eventually leave the bike out of sight, and I fasten it with them to the camp where we had a very nice time. The next day I got the bike after a short walk alone in the desert just before sunrise.

 Lundi 19, je repartirai donc très tôt vers M’Hamid, le village où l’Oued Draa disparaît dans le sable du Sahara, la porte du Désert.

M’Hamid est le lieu de départ d’une multitude de raids en 4×4 pour le désert et les oasis. Les pistes qui en partent mènent jusque Foum Zguid.

Monday 19th, so I will leave very early to Hamid, the village where the Oued Draa disappears in the sand of theSaharaDesertdoor.

Renseignements pris auprès des locaux, il est à priori très difficile de les emprunter avec une moto aussi lourde et chargée que la mienne. Il n’a pas fallu plus de 30 mn, pour que j’aie plus de 10 propositions pour organiser le périple les bagages chargés dans un 4×4 qui m’accompagnerait, pour m’alléger et m’assister en cas de chute ou d’ensablement.

D’un point de vue pratique et sécuritaire, c’était intéressant mais les tarifs demandés étant exorbitants, j’ai décidé d’attendre qu’un éventuel convoi de 4×4  passe pour leur demander si je peux me joindre à eux. En allant au Cyber café du village pour consulter mes mails, je rencontrerai Léon, un artiste Français venu chercher l’inspiration dans le désert pour l’écriture d’une pièce de théâtre.

Il est hébergé par une association agricole qui organise formations et échanges sur le thème de l’agriculture en zone désertique. Mohamed, un Franco-Marocain s’en occupe. Je l’accompagnerai sur place dans la palmeraie.

Au cours de la discussion, Mohamed et moi nous mettons d’accord pour partir le lendemain jusqu’à l’oasis Sacrée car il y accompagne deux Italiennes en congé avec son 4×4. Je reprendrai la piste seul le surlendemain, après une nuit au Bivouac de Chegaga dans le désert.

Ces deux journées de piste seront certes éprouvantes (m’en faudra autant pour faire passer les courbatures) mais quel décor !! Et puis maintenant je suis capable de relever la moto sans démonter les bagages (enfin selon …) Et après tout …vous, vous avez une montre, moi j’ai le temps… Hi Hi

J’arriverai donc Mardi 21 à Foum Zguid, bien fatigué, et j’y passerai la nuit sous tente. Au camping j’ai rencontré Noureddine, un organisateur de raid qui loue des Motos sur Marrakech : Super sympa et sérieux mécano !!

I arrive Tuesday 21 Foum Zguid, very tired, and I spend the night in tents. At the campsite I met Noureddine, a raid organizer rents Motorbikes in Marrakech: Great fun and serious mechanic!

Mercredi 22, après une longue route (c’est que du goudron, çà roule bien ….) vers Tata puis Goulmine, je pousserai jusqu’à «la plage blanche» pour planter la tente, près de 2 camping-caristes Français.

Wednesday 22, after a long drive (is that tar, runs well here ….) to Tata Goulmine then, I will push to « White Beach » for the tent, nearly 2 motorhome French.

Enfin, Jeudi 23, direction Tan Tan puis Laayoune, où je compte passer 2 nuits. La route qui longe l’Atlantique est vraiment magnifique par endroits, malgré une tempête de sable sur les premiers kms.

Finally, Thursday 23 towards Tan Tan and Laayoune, where I intend to spend 2 nights. The road along the Atlanticis really beautiful in places, despite a sandstorm on the first kms.

Samedi matin, çà faisait longtemps que je n’avais pas fait une telle grasse matinée !

Un super Hammam pour laver la bête qui commençait à sentir le fennec, faire une lessive et me régaler de Tajine et pâtisseries locales … Un repos bien mérité.

Saturday morning, here’s been awhile since I had not relaxed!

Depuis mon arrivée à Marrakech, Vendredi soir dernier, je suis chez mes amis Alain et Maria.

Friday 16th, I took off.

J’y aurai bien vécu !

Week end peinard et semaine tranquille …

Quelques repas en terrasse, une cure de jus d’orange pour soigner la crève que j’avais choppée à Casa, et me voilà remis d’aplomb !

J’ai accompagné Alain sur un gros chantier que je suis depuis plus de 2 ans, et dont j’aurai ainsi pu voir l’évolution : çà d’vient bon et ce sera franchement grandiose…

J’ai également profité d’être à Marrakech pour faire réaliser un habillage de ma selle avec la peau de mouton retournée beige clair offerte par Alain….

C’est qu’avec la selle d’origine en plastique noir, quand la machine est restée au soleil un moment, il est parfois difficile de remettre les fesses dessus… Chaud chaud les marrons !

What a good life!

Weekend cushy and a quiet week went by…

Some meals on the terrace, a course of orange juice to cure a cold that I caught in Casa, and that put me back together!

I accompanied Alain on a big project, that I’ve been involved in for more than two years, and which I have been able to see the evolution: here comes the good and what is frankly impressive…

I also used to be in Marrakech to perform a skin of my saddle with sheepskin beige offered by Alain…

This is with the original seat in black plastic, when the machine has been in the sun for a while, it is sometimes difficult to put on the buttocks … Hot chestnuts!

Concernant les jours à venir, le programme est fixé : Aujourd’hui route vers Tinerhir en passant par Ouarzazate, et en coupant un peu par les pistes. Je passerai une nuit là-bas.

Samedi je compte faire une boucle pour passer dans les gorges de Todra et les gorges de Dadés. Ce n’est pas vraiment la route pour la Mauritanie mais il parait que c’est magnifique, alors ce serait dommage de ne pas y aller.

Dimanche je compte redescendre sur Ouarzazate puis Zagora où je rencontrerai peut-être Alexandre et Sonia Poussin qui accompagnent un groupe de randonneurs vers le Sud de la vallée du Draa. Selon la difficulté des pistes qu’ils emprunteront, je les accompagnerai jusqu’à leur camp.

Enfin Lundi, je redescends sur la route de Tan Tan pour m’approcher de la Mauritanie.

Durant les jours qui viennent je n’aurai donc certainement pas de connexion internet…

J’avoue que je suis impatient de vivre ces prochaines expériences car, si depuis le début de mon périple j’ai essentiellement roulé sur de l’autoroute et suis passé par des grandes villes, ce qui m’attend sera bien plus sympa : De la piste, des paysages de dunes et d’oasis, et j’espère encore des rencontres inoubliables.

Concerning the coming days, the program is set: Today drive to Tinerhir through Ouarzazate, and by cutting a few tracks. I spend a night there.

Saturday, I plan to do a loop to pass through the Todra and Dades gorges. This is not really the way to Mauritania but it seems that it is beautiful, and it would be a shame not to go.

Sunday, I count down to Ouarzazate and Zagora where I perhaps meet Alexandre and Sonia Poussin accompanying a group of hikers to the south of the Draa  Valley. The difficulty of the tracks they use, I will accompany them to their camp.

Lastly on Monday, I’m going down the road to Tan Tan nearMauritania.

In the next few days or so I will certainly not have internet connection…

I admit that I’m looking forward to the next life experiences as if, since the beginning of my journey I basically rolled on the highway and went through major cities, what awaits me is much more fun: From the track, dune landscapes and oasis, and I still hope for unforgettable encounters. 

After my short stay in Larache, I had to leave after saying goodbye to Khalid and his family. I realize that it will always be difficult times but to leave my new friends, but it’s the journey.

Je suis heureux que mon premier contact sur le continent africain ait été si riche, et je reprends la route plein de bonne énergie pour continuer.

Destination Rabat où je dois faire mon Visa pour la Mauritanie.

Seulement, je suis parti trop tard ce matin et j’arrive à Rabat à 14h.

Les demandes s’effectuant le matin pour un visa rendu le lendemain après midi : je suis chocolat….

Sur le coup, je décide de continuer vers Marrakech pour revenir le lendemain mais change d’avis à Casablanca (pourquoi faire 330 kms aller et retour pour un visa, alors que je suis sur place et qu’il m’aurait de toute façon fallu attendre une nuit à Rabat pour le récupérer)

Casa c’est immense et j’y arrive à la mauvaise heure : Paris aux heures de pointes au mois d’Août …

Après être tombé à la renverse en constatant les prix exorbitants des hôtels, j’ai Alain au téléphone, et il me met en relation avec des amis sur place.

Les amis en question sont vraiment super. La moto sera stationnée dans le garage d’un de leur voisin, ils m’emmènent dans un hôtel bien meilleur marché prés de chez eux, et me mettent mal à l’aise en payant ma chambre…. Mais je n’aurai pas le dernier mot…  Merci à Marc et Samira.

Le lendemain je retournerai tôt pour Rabat faire ma demande de Visa.

Malgré les bouchons en sortant de Casa, j’y arrive à 10H. Les dossiers devant être déposés avant 11H, je suis détendu. Sauf qu’une fois face au guichet, on me dit qu’il faut une photocopie du passeport (alors qu’ils le gardent de toute façon). J’aurai le temps de courir pas loin de là pour faire celle-ci et lorsque je me retrouve devant la même personne, cette fois-ci mes photos d’identité ne lui vont pas. J’en avais imprimé plusieurs sur des pages A4 en France avant de partir, mais il veut des vrais photos pas sur papier …

Après une course contre la montre je trouve pas loin de là un «photomaton» et réussi à arriver devant le fonctionnaire, toujours aussi aimable juste à temps pour lui donner mon dossier… ouf !

Je comprendrai après coup en assistant à un échange de bakchich entre un Marocain et deux Français arrivés juste après 11 H, qu’il est encore possible de déposer son dossier après l’heure officielle (C’est juste un peu plus cher…)

Tous ces aller retour autour de l’ambassade ont un bon côté : On y rencontre beaucoup de monde et surtout les candidats à la même traversée de frontière. Je discuterai avec Corneille, un congolais de Brazzaville que j’ai aidé pour remplir le formulaire. Nous échangeons nos numéros de téléphone. Je le rencontrerai sûrement là-bas.

A la sortie de l’ambassade j’irai manger un Tièboudienne et boire du Bissap dans un «resto sénégalais clandestin» dont les clients sont racolés à la sortie des ambassades : Même pas peur ! Super !

The friends in question are really great. The bike is parked in the garage of their neighbour, they take me to a much better hotel market near home, and make me uncomfortable by paying my room… But I will have the last word… Thanks to Mark and Samira.

The next day I will return soon toRabatfor my visa request.

Despite the plugs out of Casa, I arrived at 10 am. The records must be filed before 11 am, I’m relaxed. But once against the counter, I was told that we need a photocopy of the passport. (So they keep anyway). I have no time to run away from there to get it and when I find myself in front of the same person, this time my passport photos are not going to him. I had several printed on A4 pages in France before leaving, but he wants the real pictures not on paper…

After a race against time I found not far from there a « booth » and managed to get to the official, always friendly just in time to give my file … phew!

I understand afterwards attending an exchange between a bribe and two Moroccan French arrived who had just after 11 am, it is still possible to file a case after the official time (It’s just a little more complicated…)

All these go back around the embassy have a good side: We meet many people and especially the candidates at the same border
crossing. I chatted with Cornelius, a Congolese from Brazzaville, which I helped to complete the form. We exchanged phone numbers. I surely will meet him there.

At the exit of the embassy I ate and drank Tiéboudienne Bissap in a « clandestine Senegalese restaurant » whose clients are those who exit the embassy: No fear! Super!

Voilà, maintenant il me faut trouver un endroit pour passer la nuit, je pars vers la médina et cherche un endroit pour boire un thé, je suis détendu et me laisse me perdre dans la foule.

En allant boire un jus d’orange je discute avec un marocain : Vous connaissez un endroit où je pourrais passer la nuit pas trop cher ?

Mohamed est vraiment sympa et on discute un moment. Lorsque je lui explique mon voyage et lui précise que je veux passer par la vallée du Draa, il m’annonce qu’il est né là-bas, que c’est un endroit superbe et que les habitants sont des berbères, à l’accueil légendaire.

Il m’invitera à passer la nuit chez lui …

Encore une fois, la providence et un accueil hors du commun. Il me servira un bon repas, demandera à des amis maçons qui travaillent sur un chantier prés de chez lui pour y laisser la moto, et nous passerons une excellente soirée à refaire le monde.

Well, now I must find a place to spend the night, I go to the medina and looking for a place to drink tea, I relaxed and let myself get lost in the crowd.

Mohamed is really nice and time is discussed. When I explained my trip and he said that if I want to go through the Draa Valley, he told me that he was born there, it’s a great place and the people are Berber in the legendary hospitality.

He invites me to spend the night at his place.

Once again an extraordinary welcome. He served me a meal, asked friend’s masons working on a construction site near his home
to drop off the bike, and we spent a great evening to chatting about the world.

Je prends de plus en plus conscience que le fait d’être un voyageur solitaire ouvre des portes.

Le lendemain, photo souvenir et échange de mail.

Vendredi 14H je récupère mon Visa ! Et prends la route aussitôt pour Marrakech, où je vais chez des amis, Alain, Maria sa femme, Noha et Julien leurs enfants.

J’y arrive juste au coucher de soleil… Houha…..

14h on Friday, I get my Visa! And on the road immediately to Marrakech, where I visit friends, Alain, his wife Maria, Julien and Noha, their children.

Sunday, March the 4^th, the big day! After a power failure and alarm (that I switched on for 3 o’clock yesterday.) and don’t have much time to store the stuff on the bike and lunch, I take the route to Tarifa towards the boat.

Le Sud de l’Espagne est magnifique, les routes sinueuses et le vent de la mer qui approche vont vite me réveiller.

The South of Spain is beautiful, winding roads and the wind of the sea that approaches will quickly wake me up.

A Tarifa, je me prends un peu la tête au guichet en demandant mon billet pour le bateau : La personne me dit qu’il me faut d’abord faire tamponner mon passeport avant d’acheter le billet, alors que d’après mes renseignements, je dois le faire tamponner sur le bateau….

En plus la douane du Port est fermée, ils me font tourner en rond pendant une heure et je déclare forfait en retournant sur Algeciras, où finalement on me confirme que je ne dois rien faire pour mon passeport avant de monter sur le bateau : tout se fera à bord….

J’ai sûrement rien compris à Tarifa : Faudra vraiment que je progresse en Anglais….

In addition to the customs, the port is closed, they make me turn around for an hour and I forfeit my ticket by returning to Algeciras, where finally it was confirmed that I should first stamp my passport before getting on the boat: everything will be on board…

I certainly don’t understand anything in Tarifa: I really need to make some progress in English…

Avec tout ça j’arrive à Tanger assez tard. Et la douane Marocaine n’a rien arrangé : elle me fera perdre encore presque une heure et demie pour régler les papiers d’entrée du véhicule, faire mon enregistrement à la police (dont le bureau était fermé), et surtout me faire poireauter !

Moi qui ne voulais pas rouler de nuit en Afrique, me voilà contraint de rejoindre LARACHE via une autoroute non éclairée, où les autocars passent de la voie de gauche à celle de droite sans raison, et où il commence à cailler sévère….

A LARACHE, j’ai un contact qui m’a été donné par Jean Jacques : Khalid BELAZIZ.

Bien que le «bar central», où je suis sensé trouver Khalid n’existe plus, je finis, à force de «Tu connais Khalid BELAZIZ ?» et après avoir demandé à quelqu’un qui connaissait quelqu’un qui le connaissait de l’appeler, par réussir à le faire venir à moi …

Ancien prof de Maths retraité, il travaille maintenant dans une association qui aide les jeunes à s’en sortir dans les quartiers défavorisés de LARACHE.

With all that done, I get to Tangier quite late. Moroccan customs did not help: it will still cost me almost an hour and a half to set the papers right to input the vehicle to my police registration (whose office was closed), and especially for me just hanging around!

I, who did not want to drive at night in Africa, here I am forced to join LARACHE via an unlit highway where buses go from the left lane to the right for no reason, and when it begins to curdle severely…

In LARACHE, I have a contact that was given to me by Jean Jacques: Khalid Belaziz.

Although the « central bar, » where I was supposed to find Khalid no longer exists, In the end I was forced to start asking, « You know Khalid Belaziz? » And after asking someone who knew someone who knew of him called him saying I was here and to come to me…

Old retired maths teacher, he now works in an organization that helps young people to get out of the inner city of Larache.

L’association «Centre Amsterdam» créée par des Hollandais a pour vocation de motiver les enfants à retourner à l’école via un apprentissage artistique : ils ont accès à des cours de théâtre, musique, peinture et autres activités leur apprenant à s’exprimer librement.

Khalid me demande d’intervenir en parlant de mon voyage et en projetant mes photos : ce sera une expérience enrichissante et un vrai échange pendant lequel les enfants se montreront très curieux.

The « Centre Amsterdam » association created by Dutch motivate children to return to school through an artistic learning aims: they have access to courses of theatre, music, painting and other activities teaching them to express themselves freely.

Khalid asked to intervene by talking about my journey and projecting my photos: this will be a rewarding experience and a real exchange in which children show much curiosity.

Nous irons également dans une autre association dont Khalid est le président, où des bénévoles donnent des cours de musique à des jeunes depuis plusieurs années. Certains d’entre eux sont aujourd’hui sollicités lors de festivals au Maroc et en Espagne…

We also went to another association that Khalid is the Chairman, where volunteers give music lessons to young people for several years. Some of them are now asked at festivals in Morocco and Spain.

Je ne resterai que 2 jours à LARACHE avec Khalid. Mais nous aurons le temps de rendre visite à son frère, un artiste peintre qui  a fait ses études aux beaux arts en Belgique, et qui enseigne son art aux gamins.

Encore une fois des soirées magiques dans un cadre artistique, où je me suis essayé à faire quelques films.

I stayed only 2 days in LARACHE with Khalid. But we had enough time to  visit his brother, a painter who studied at the Fine Arts in Belgium, and teaches his art to kids.

Again, we experienced magical evenings in an artistic setting, which I tried to film some movies.
