Well, I left Israel, and also the Middle East, which was the transition between Africa and Europe, at least in Southern Europe and the Balkans.

Je resterai 10 jours en Grèce avec Titi, et nous les passerons essentiellement sur l’île d’Eubée plus communément appelée l’île d’Evvia par les Grecs.

Cette île a l’avantage d’offrir des paysages variés et nous alternerons montagnes, où la fraicheur et la bonne odeur des sapins contraste avec les immenses étendues d’oliviers dans les vallées ; et plages de galets, certes beaucoup moins jolies qu’en Afrique mais où les baignades sont rafraichissantes en ce mois d’août presque caniculaire dans le secteur.

I will stay 10 days in Greece with Titi, and we stayed mainly on the island of Evia more commonly known as the Evvia island by the Greeks.

This island has the advantage of offering varied landscapes and we will alternate mountains, where the freshness and the aroma of pine trees contrast with its extensive olive groves in the valleys; and pebble beaches, certainly much less pretty than in Africa but where swimming is refreshing in August almost heatwave in the sector.

Nous passerons les nuits dans des campings ou en bivouac dans la nature, et ferons le plein de vitamines en dégustant les légendaires salades grecques, poissons grillés, tzatziki et féta du pays.

A Athènes, mon pote Oliv de Lille, que je salue au passage, m’avait mis en relation avec un ami de son beau frère qui tient un garage moto spécialisé dans les anciennes BMW et les Harley.

We will spend the nights in campgrounds or camp in nature, and do plenty of vitamins enjoying the legendary Greek salads, grilled fish, tzatziki and feta country.

In Athens, buddy Oliv Lille, I salute the way, had put me in touch with a friend of her brother in law who owns a motorcycle Garage specializes in older BMW and Harley.

For our last evening Titi and I will be welcomed home, less than an hour from Athens, which will give us the opportunity to go visit the world famous Acropolis without having to look for housing in this crowded capital of tourists summer.

Je reprendrai la route le 31 Juillet  direction la Macédoine. La moto commence sérieusement à fatiguer. L’embrayage que j’avais «resserré» en supprimant les rondelles à Madagascar recommence à patiner aux accélérations franches à bas régime. Je décide donc d’emprunter l’autoroute de façon à éviter d’avoir à changer de vitesse trop souvent. Il ne me reste qu’environ 3000 bornes jusqu’au bercail et il va falloir gérer !

J’arriverai à Skopje en fin de soirée, trempé comme une soupe ! La météo plus au nord a littéralement changé, et l’autoroute en Macédoine devient parfois un véritable torrent de boue. Lors de mes passages sur les aires de repos, tout le monde se plaint de la météo désastreuse cet été.

I will take the road on July 31 towards Macedonia. The bike is seriously getting tired. The clutch that I had « tightened » by removing washers Madagascar starts to skate free acceleration at low revs. So I decided to take the motorway to avoid having to change gears too often. Le lendemain, même punition ! Une météo apocalyptique jusqu’à ma deuxième nuit à Podgorica dans un petit hôtel. Je quitterai la Macédoine, traverserai le Kossovo, le Nord de l’Albanie et la moitié du Monténégro sous des averses diluviennes.

Après cette longue douche forcée le beau temps re pointera enfin son nez quand j’arriverai à Ljubuski, au sud de Mostar en Bosnie Herzégovine.

Il est ingénieur en voirie et travaux publics et depuis près de trois ans il est responsable d’un chantier de construction d’un tronçon d’autoroute en Bosnie.

Lui-même est passionné de moto, et propriétaire d’une BMW 1100 RS et d’une splendide Honda VTR 1000. Comme j’arrive à Ljubuski un samedi en fin de journée, il m’invite à le rejoindre à une concentration Moto à Livno où il se trouve déjà avec son ami Madjo.

Nous y passerons une excellente soirée: près de 4000 personnes et 2000 motos ! Bière, concert de Rock et bonne humeur !

I found Michael, who had heard of my journey and my blog, following me for several months now (he gave me the contact of father Angelo Wukro in Ethiopia because he had worked there for the renovation of the road from Amba Alague).

He is an engineer in roads and public works, and for nearly three years he was responsible for a construction of a section of highway in Bosnia.

Itself is motorcycle enthusiast and owner of a BMW 1100 RS and a splendid Honda VTR 1000 As I reach Ljubuski a Saturday late in the day, he invited me to join him at a concentration Motorcycle Livno where he is already with his friend Madjo.

We will spend a great evening: nearly 4,000 people and 2,000 bikes! Beer, rock concert and good mood!

Les Bosniaques sont à priori très férus de moto et les petits clubs «toute marque» organisent à tour de rôle des rassemblements de ce genre. Au lendemain de cette festive soirée et d’une très courte nuit sous tente, Michel et moi rentrerons à Ljubuski et il m’accueillera dans son appartement où je passerai toute la semaine suivante. 

Bosnians are a priori very keen motorcycle and small clubs « any brand » organize in turn gatherings like this. In the aftermath of the festive evening and a very short night in tents, Michel and I will go back to Ljubuski and welcome me to his apartment where I will spend the whole next week.

Michel ayant été expatrié quasi trente années de sa vie, majoritairement en Afrique, on passe volontiers des heures à l’écouter raconter ses anecdotes.

Michel was Expatriate almost thirty years of his life, mostly in Africa, we gladly spent hours listening to her tell stories.

Puis il m’invitera à aller visiter son chantier : des tunnels, de longues voies toutes neuves et de gigantesques viaducs.

Then he invites me to visit his site: tunnels, long tracks and brand new gigantic viaducts.

En parlant de pont, il m’emmènera voir le célèbre pont de Mostar.

Inscrite au patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO, Mostar est la ville la plus visitée en Bosnie-Herzégovine. Nichée dans la vallée de Neretva, elle se caractérise par ses anciennes maisons turques et par le «Stari Most» (littéralement «vieux pont») qui lui a valu son nom. Ancienne cité-frontière Ottomane, la ville et son pont ont malheureusement été détruits lors des conflits des années 90. Mais grâce à l’UNESCO l’ensemble sera reconstruit et deviendra un symbole de la coopération internationale et de la cohabitation entre diverses communautés culturelles, ethniques et religieuses.

Speaking of bridges, it will take me to see the famous Mostar bridge.

World Heritage of UNESCO, Mostar is the most visited city in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Nestled in the valley of Neretva, it is characterized by its old Turkish houses and the « Stari Most » (literally « old bridge ») that earned him his name. Ancient city-Ottoman border, the city and its bridge were unfortunately destroyed during the conflicts of the 90s But thanks to UNESCO, all will be rebuilt and become a symbol of international cooperation and of the coexistence of diverse cultural, ethnic and religious.

J’accompagnerai également Michel lors d’un aller-retour professionnel à Sarajevo et en profiterai pour faire brièvement (et sous la pluie) un petit tour dans la capitale de la Bosnie-Herzégovine. Bien qu’elle reste dans nos mémoires comme ayant été anéantie par la guerre de Bosnie, Sarajevo est aujourd’hui une ville où les traces des différentes cultures l’ayant influencée restent présentes. Des mosquées aux petites échoppes rappelant la Bosnie Ottomane du XVI e siècle, aux grandioses constructions coloniales Austro-hongroises le long des berges de la Miliacka, en passant par d’immenses pôles commerciaux regorgeant de boutiques de luxe, tout y est.

I also go with Michel during a round trip to Sarajevo professional and take this opportunity to give a brief (and rain) a small tour in the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Although still remembered as having been destroyed by the war in Bosnia, Sarajevo is today a city where the traces of different cultures having influenced remain present. Mosques small stalls reminiscent of Ottoman Bosnia sixteenth century, grand colonial buildings Austro-Hungarian along the banks of the Miliacka, through huge commercial centres full of boutiques, everything is there.

Nous reprendrons ensemble la route le samedi 9 Août en début d’après midi, pour aller à une deuxième concentration moto à Sinj en Croatie (Michel par la route sinueuse et moi par l’autoroute).

We will take the road Saturday, August9 inthe early afternoon to go to a second concentration motorcycle Sinj in Croatia (Michel by the winding road and I by highway).

Je quitte donc les magnifiques terres de Bosnie-Herzégovine après y avoir eu du bon temps et ses habitants m’auront laissé une vraie bonne impression. Toujours prêts à fraterniser et à rendre service ! J’aurai également profité de mon séjour à Ljubuski pour faire le tour des différents professionnels ou amateurs de mécanique du club moto dont Michel fait partie, et pour regarder de plus près mon embrayage et recueillir différents avis : après démontage de mon démarreur, il s’avère que les joints spy moteur ne sont plus étanches : l’huile vient s’écouler sur le disque !

I leave the beautiful land of Bosnia and Herzegovina after having had a good time and its inhabitants have left a really good impression. Always ready to socialize and to be of service! I have also enjoyed my stay at Ljubuski to tour the various professional and amateur mechanics motorcycle club which Michael is a part, and a closer look at my clutch and collect different opinion: after removing my starter, its transpire that the engine oil seals are leaking: oil is leaking onto the disc!

Il n’y a donc rien d’autre à faire que rentrer doucement en le nettoyant régulièrement si nécessaire au dégraissant. Trop de boulot et de frais !

So there’s nothing else to do but go slowly by regularly cleaning the grease if necessary. Too much work and expense!

When woman travels

Direction : Pula ! Du moins le petit village de Svetvincenat se situant à quelques kilomètres de là dans la péninsule d’Istrie.

Cette fois ce sont mes amis lyonnais Mike et Edith, chez qui j’étais passé lors de ma descente, qui sont en vacances avec leurs enfants Clément et Alice, le frère d’Edith Philippe, son épouse Siobhan et leurs enfants Lili et Sébastien. Ils m’accueilleront dans la magnifique villa qu’ils ont louée pour l’occase. Je passerai donc deux journées en leur compagnie : farniente, balade, que du bonheur !

Direction: Pula! At least the small village of Svetvincenat is just a few miles away in the Istrian peninsula.

This time they are my friends Mike Lyons and Edith, with whom I had gone on my descent, who are vacationing with their children Clement and Alice, Edith’s brother Philip, his wife Siobhan and their children Lili and Sebastian. They welcome me into the splendid villa they rented for secondhand. I spend two days with them: relaxing, walking, happiness!

Je quitte la Croatie le 13 Août au matin en direction de l’Italie.

J’ai pris le coup avec la moto. Doucement dans les montées, parfois au cul d’un camion, ça passe pas trop mal. J’essuierai une averse à peine après avoir franchi la frontière italienne mais la météo redevenant plus sèche et ensoleillée en soirée, je trouverai un endroit très calme à moins de deux kilomètres du petit village de Silvano pour, non sans nostalgie, passer ma dernière nuit de bivouac en pleine nature.

I left Croatia on August13 inthe morning in the direction of Italy.

I took the shot with the bike. Gently uphill, sometimes the ass of a truck, it not going too bad. I will wipe a downpour just after crossing the Italian border but the weather again becoming drier and sunny evening, I will find a quiet place less than two miles from the village of Silvano for, not without nostalgia, spend my last night bivouac in the wilderness.

Le 14 Août, je continuerai tranquillement pour enfin arriver vers midi…  en France !

Symboliquement, et puisqu’il n’y a pas de bureau de douane sur le passage frontière de l’autoroute, je décide de descendre dans la ville de Menton pour aller de suite m’acquitter de mon obligation administrative concernant le carnet de passage en douane : l’attestation de retour en France de la moto. Surtout que plus vite fait, plus vite je récupérerai ma caution. Un type me dit que le bureau de douane se trouve à l’ancien poste frontière qui longe la côte. J’y vais : Rien !

Je retourne en ville, demande à des policiers municipaux : ceux-ci me rigoleront au nez et l’un d’entre eux finira par me dire que c’est sur le troisième passage frontière plus haut dans les montagnes…  J’y vais, juste des bureaux de police des frontières. J’aperçois un policier à la porte, m’arrête pour lui demander où se trouvent les bureaux de douane.

Le gars…  genre hypertrophié à la protéine de blanc d’œuf de poules élevées aux hormones, un oursin sous chaque bras, me regarde avec une gueule de tueur et me répond sur un ton très désagréable :

-  Y plus de douaniers ici !

- Ok mais y sont où les bureaux de douane ??  Il y en a encore à Menton ??

- J’en sais rien ! Dégagez !

Oh là ! J’me casse ! Un peu énervé d’avoir encore rien mangé aujourd’hui et d’être, après plus d’une heure à tourner en rond, au même stade… Et là ! Un grand flash dans mes rétros…

Quoi ??  Un éclair ? Le ciel est bleu ! Oh non ! Un radar automatique ! Dans une tite boite grise !

Sur une deux fois deux voies où y a pas un chat ! Avec des bordures de trottoir de 30 cm de haut ! Limité à 30 Km/h !!!!!!!!

On August 14, I will continue quietly to finally arrive around noon … in France!

Symbolically, and since there is no customs office on the border crossing the highway, I decided to descend into the town of Menton to go away fulfill my obligation for administrative carnet customs: the certificate of return to France of the bike. Especially since more quickly, faster I’ll get my deposit. One guy told me that the customs office is located at the former border crossing along the coast. I go: Nothing!

I returned to town, asked municipal police: they will laugh at me and one of them will eventually tell me that this is the third border crossing earlier in the mountains … I go, just offices border police. I saw a policeman at the door, stopped me to ask where the customs offices.

The guy … hypertrophied protein egg white hens with hormones, a sea urchin under each arm kind, looks at me with a killer hangover and meets me in a very rude tone:

- Are more customs here!

- Ok, but where there are customs offices ?? There are still Menton ??

- I know! Off!

Oh! I just left! A little upset to have not eaten yet today and be, after more than an hour to turn around at the same stage … And then! A big flash in my retro …

What ?? A flash? The sky is blue! Oh no! A speed camera! Tite in a gray box!

On a dual carriageway where there is not a cat! With curbs 30cm high! Limited to30 Km/ h !!!!!!!!

Putain ! J’suis en France !

Je déclare forfait : j’irai au bureau de douane à Montpellier !

Je continue donc ma route, ou plutôt mon autoroute, jusque chez Franck et Marie à Castries et y resterai 6 jours. Ils reçoivent Florence, la sœur de Franck, son mari Christophe et leur fille Camille. 6 jours de pur bonheur ! Balade aux estivales de Montpellier à déguster des huitres, petits plats à la maison, tartes aux prunes du jardin confectionnées par Flo ! Finalement un retour sur le sol français chez des amis avec le bon parfum du terroir ! C’est cool !

Fuck! I’m in France!

I declare package: I will go to the customs office in Montpellier!

So I continue my way, or my highway, even with Frank and Marie in Castries and will stay 6 days. They receive Florence, sister of Frank, her husband Chris and their daughter Camille. 6 days of pure bliss! Ride to summer from Montpellier to taste oysters, meals at home, pies plum garden crafted by Flo! Finally back on French soil with friends with the fragrance of soil! This is cool!

Voilà maintenant je compte remonter tranquille !

Je dois gérer la moto : ce serait ballot après près de 85000 kms de pas finir les 1000 qu’il me reste pour rejoindre le bercail…  Malgré toutes les sympathiques propositions pour faire le tour des copains, je vais rentrer direct en ne faisant plus de pause que chez Pascal et Christine dans le Jura, chez ma sœur en Bourgogne et enfin chez JJ à Paris.

Retour prévu le 13 Septembre à Bollezeele chez Didier et Flora «Au Tour du Monde» vers 15 h pour boucler dignement la boucle autour…  d’une Chouffe !

I have to manage the bike: it would ballot after nearly 85,000 kms of not finishing the 1,000 I have left to join the fold … Despite all the friendly proposals to tour buddies, I’ll go live no longer making break than Pascal and Christine in the Jura, at my sister’s home in Burgundy and finally to Paris JJ.

Expected return on September 13 to Bollezeele at Didier and Flora « On World Tour » to 15 hours to complete the loop around dignity … a Chouffe!
